I was trying to decide on which knife to purchase between the CRKT M16-14SF Tanto Aluminum combo edge dual hilt with 5 point serrations or Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto tip? I'm looking for a tanto tipped folding knife that is capable for self-defense, heavy duty work including survival applications. Which knife do you think is better? If there is a similar knife in size and quality with these specs, I'd love to hear about it as well. For the record, I like both knives, but just can't afford both. Thanks.

I agree.

While I have a fondness for CRKT M16s with the Carson flipper, they are huge and don't sit well in your pocket and can snag & rip up a pair of jeans. -Guess how I know!

I've got that double guard model a buddy brought back and gave me from Iraq he got in the px back in the day. I don't care for the double guard as it snags on the pocket quite a bit. The Recon is the way to go especially with the Demko locking system, way stronger.

I carried a CRKT M16- 14SFG (the Large version) with VEFF serrations for a couple of years. Those serrations would cut like nothing I’d seen before. Eventually the liner lock got sloppy and I found something to replace it with as my new work knife.

The Cold Steel Recon is a better knife than the CRKT

The Recon 1 is a great knife. I bought the spear point version and liked it so much that I immediately ordered the tanto and clip point. They are light but strong and have an extremely comfortable grip design. Scary sharp out of the box, too.

If you like to tinker, it's fun to tune the Recon 1 (or any Cold Steel folder) action. They respond well to some smoothing and polishing in the right places.

I own many of both and like them. even a couple very early versions assembled in usa crkt m16s.

the cold steel is the better choice for those tasks.

Yeah, I do like both knives as well. Well, I guess I'll just have to save up and get them both (lol), but I agree that the Cold Steel Recon 1 with the best lockup in the biz and superior steel make it a winner for my needs. They are also similarly priced knives, so the value factor definitely favors the Recon 1.
