Hey...I just got myself a CRKT M16 EDC. Its not the 2006 one and it comes with the manual LAWKS system. This is my situation:

I open the blade.
I engage the LAWKS lock.
I push back the linear lock and try to move my blade around.
Although the LAWKS notch thing doesn't allow my linear lock to fully disengage,
The blade still has a little play.

(My linear lock is pushed with my finger till it touches the LAWKS notch and my blade has some play but cant be closed)

Is this normal? Thanks for your opinion...

I've got an older (2002?) M16-14 that behaves the same way. I believe this is normal as the LAWKS is not intended to actually lock the blade itself, but rather prevent the main lock from being disengaged enough for the blade to close. As long as the liner lock can't be fully opened w/the LAWKS on, you should be fine.

Welcome to the forums, BTW. :)

thanks for the reply...and thanks for the welcome. Hope to learn good things from the good people here. :-)

What you're describing is perfectly normal operation. The same thing occurs on my CRKT Point Guard. As trout stated, the mechanism is simply intended to prevent the lock from disengaging, not to hold the lock completely tight.

Yea I'll chime in agreeing with the above, my Prowler does the same thing.
This doesn't lessen my confidence is the LAWKs though.

Yup, its normal. Take a look at the tang where the liner meets. It's angled (like most if not all liner locks, I believe). Pushing the liner "opens" up a little space that will account for the blade play. I suppose the LAWKS was made to prevent complete lock failure.

Some people report they've actually been able to get the LAWKS to disengage by stressing the blade, but I've never seen this happen. I know that many on this board also say not to take seriously CRKT's claim that its LAWKS make knives virtually fixed blades.

Ok thanks guys. I should be quite confident with it then. Is the auto-lawks version any different from the lawks system? Or does it just come spring loaded?
