CRKT M16, locking liner reliable?

I just picked up one of these and the liner lock is very bad.
It appears to lock up perfect visually, but I can close it with hand pressure like a slip joint. Spine wack with one finger can fold it.
This is the aluminum handle 04 large tanto. Actually, this is my third one, I really liked the other two. So, is this a common problem?
Did I have bad luck on this one, or good on the first two? I am sending it back today, I hear they have good CS and turnaround?

One more thing while I am here.

TANTO Since the 80's I have wondered. How to pronounce that word. is it Tonto (like in the Lone Ranger) Tan toe ( a sun baked appendage) tuntoo tuntoh ? anyone? anyone? anyone? Bueller? anyone?

I own two M16 (13 and 03Z) and the liner locks have caused no problems till now.

I think It's kinda like Tan Toe.
I have two and tried more. They don't fail like that.
I'm sure if you send it in they'll try hard to make it right. Make sure you double check though because although their customer service is great, someone in the warranty is kinda silly and makes stupid mistakes.

I have found CRK&T's cust. service to be exellent, I am sure they will take care of the problem.
Calyth is right about the pronunciation (at least that is how Lynn Thompson says it in his Proof video).

Actually, going with it as a Japanese word--it's pronounced like the Lone Ranger's sidekick. Kinda like "tawn (rhymes with fawn) toe."

CRKT will warranty that without any hassles. It seems to be a problem on many (not all) of the M16 series.

Of all the sporting knives sold at the store I work at the CRKT M16 is the one that we have to warranty the most. I don't know why that is. The latest one that was warrantied was a CF M16. All for that liner problem.

If you get a good one though they lock up pretty solid. I have two of the small CF versions myself.

We hear a lot of CRKT liner lock problems. I'd consider them unsafe without the LAWKS, but then, I'm already not a liner lock fan.

A few of the m-16 models have the "lawks" lock now. I think one of the new m-16 models coming out has the lawks.

This is true. An article said that the new ones with Titanium handles will have the LAWKS. They even showed one with double guards.

Magician:
Yours is the first M16 I have heard of having a weak lock. Most lock up so tight that you need to pry the lock open. CRKT will make good on the warranty if you need to send it in. Send your request to

Just picked up a M16-13Z. It locks pretty solid on mine.
I always check visual and the lockup on the knife that I buy, if I buy them at retail.
The word is pronounced Tan Toe. You can trust me I am Japanese.

Why is this an issue since they have that secondary sliding lock Thingy. I'm Supprised that you even noticed this problem. Inot a fan of liner locks but I thought this one might be okay because of that secondary lock. Ofcourse I bought a BM with the axis instead.

I think you are referring to the Lake And Walker Knife Safety (LAWKS)
This model does not have that fearure as stated above, some of the new ones do though.

I am not so sure I would callit weak, maybe it was ground wrong. The blade tang takes the liner rifgt in the middle. On sight it looks perfect. No blade play, but with tiny amount of pressure, it slips right off. I sent it back yesterday. Thanks for the advice.

Torah,
Thank you. That is what I always said, but I never knew for sure.

I bought an M16-03 not too long ago and have did the spine-whack test and the lock holds up just fine. In fact, after whacking the spine the lock is a little difficult to disengage.

Maybe you just got a bad one.

Good luck,
Allen.

I don't think that you should have to rely on a secondary lock to feel safe. The LAWKS is an added safety precaution, but a well done lock of any type will accomplish it's goal. I do like that in some harder tasks I can set the LAWKS to aid the liner lock, but no lock should close as easily as The Magician describes.

As for this:

Hate to bring it up again, but I want to know if I have been saying it wrong this whole time. Are you guys saying "Tan" as in the color? Because as far as I know, that "a" sound (as in apple) doesn't exist in the japanese language. The "a" in tanto should sound like the word "on," or open up and say "ahh." And just for the record I am also Japanese.

I guess you are right. Very technical.
Just for everybody education Tanto means short blade.
Zengost do you live in Japan ??
I moved to the state 4 years ago because of my job. I will most likely move
back to Tokyo next year.

Sorry, dude...I didn't mean to harp on it. It's just that I don't like to pronounce things wrong and so I wanted to know if I had been pronouncing it wrong all this time. And in fact, we probably say it the same way, but it's kinda hard to type phonetically. I live in Hawaii, and I've only been to Japan once about 12 years ago. Interesting place, but the air was a bit on the polluted side in the city (lot of smokers there). I'm hoping to go visit again someday if I can stand the long plane ride and afford the fares.

ZENGHOST,
Thanks for clarifying. The M16 lock was very bad. Keep in mind I
love the M16 series, this is my Third M16-04 I just keep coming back to it. The other two were fantastic. This one looks great, sharp, no blade play. Lock was the problem. I don't want to creep out any potential customers, I still say they are great knives. This one will be my EDC. Anyone else got any insight? Outsight?
