Hi guys, I'm looking for a decent folding knife, I like the M16 style but i also like the wave feature on something like the emerson. any suggestions/ pros or cons of each?

Do you want chisel or "v" ground blade? I like the Wave. Some people don't. Consider that. What's your application for the knife? The HD-7 has a stronger lock than the CQC, and costs more, of course. Emersons are flat ground. Good luck.

Thanks Lycosa

The knife is sort of an edc thing, but I'm in England so I can't carry it. I just want a decent folding utility knife. I like the wave because I don't really get on with thumb studs, and want one handed opening.

Thumb studs should be called thumb busters. Most of the ones found on knives that are a bit stiff are more trouble than they're worth. I like those little wheels on top of the blade's spine. You didn't say what sort of M16 you were looking for, but the flippers not only help open the knife quickly, they help the hand stay on the correct side of the hilt so it won't slide over the edge if the knife hits a hard object during a thrust.

Please consider the M21, also. Both Emerson and CRKT use chisel grinds on their blades. I recommend just sharpening them as you do your v-blade knives. The new M16-13s (except the titanium) use AUS4 steel, which replaced the better quality AUS6. Nearly all the other M16s and M21s have AUS8 blades, which is even better.

Finally, I like CRKT's blade locking system. The AutoLAWKs engages automatically; the older LAWKS must be engaged manually. I like the manual version because the knife snaps open easier and is easier to close. Either is acceptable, though.

How does the autoLAWKS system work, is it just an extra lock on the blade? I'm probably not going to use the knife for anything really heavy duty, but i'd still like a decent one. I have a CRKT Tighe Tac which I like, its the best quality knife I have ATM, but I really don't like the thumb stud, my thumb just slides over it. I'm looking for recomendations for ease of use & quality, looking at the LAWKS thing, it seems kind of awkward, am I wrong?

Sorry, I didn't say which M16 i liked. I'm looking at a spear point, partially serrated blade (I like the one with the green handles). The Emerson I'm looking at is the CQC7 with wave & partially serrated blade & tanto point. Another thing, in general utility use, is there much difference between tanto & spear/drop point?

Sam-M,
Have you looked at Spyderco? That round hole is awesome and for utility, this might be the place to look for a knife. Research Everything! And don't lose your mind. I've come close a couple of times.lol. I'm partial to Emerson because I like the chisel grind.

I've looked at spyderco, lots of people seem to rate them, but i dont really like the designs, they're all kind of a funny shape...

I do think the round hole looks useful though...

Take a look at the CQC15, a cross between a tanto and spear point and has a conventional V-grind too, kinda the best of both worlds.

Sam,
I don't own an Emerson, but they're reputed to be of very high quality. I have a CRKT M-16 13Z, I believe it is. It's alright–a cool design–but i never carry it. I know what you mean about Spyderco's as I used to feel exactly the same way. But there's function in their form, and once I purchased one I was hooked, and now I own a bunch! I don't think Spyderco has a model that's quite as "tactical" looking as what you've asked about, however. But if you get a chance to handle a couple of their knives I bet you'll understand why people so often become appreciative of their designs.

Did you look at Spyderco's UK pen knife? Totally legal where you are. Keep up the research and let us know what cha git! I'd lean toward Emerson. Your are getting good advice from Blade Forums folks.

I just looked at the CQC15 - very cool, but maybe a bit out of my price range. I am leaning towards Emerson, I've heard better things about them than CRKT. One thing I was wondering - does the wave feature work anywhere other than from your hip pocket. If you're carrying it in a jacket pocket or something like that can you still use the wave. If not I might go for the M16 since the carson flipper looks more useable from different positions.

Bear in mind these are pretty big knives and a little on the heavy side. If you clip them in your coat pocket, one side will hang down farther than the other and depending on the thickness of the pocket liner on the jacket could dictate on how well the wave feature will operate successfully. If it's a thin material type of jacket like a wind breaker you might have some problems with the wave. If its a thicker material jacket like my Carhartt or a denim type there should be no problems, but it would also work better too if the jacket is completely zipped closed. Good luck with your choice.

Emerson CQC-7 for sure...

Why cant you carry it?

i have several crkts. one m16-13z and a m16-13t and i love em' both! they are an outstanding value for the money.,,,VWB.

In Englandistan we arent allowed to carry any folding knife over three inches, any locking knife or any fixed blade without "good reason", which means that locking knives are out for EDC. Not that that means that nobody carries them, but if you get caught then it is possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and you get in lots of trouble.
Sam,
I would suggest that if, by accident, you did forget it was in your pocket or something and you were inadvertently EDCing it something less tactical looking would be better received by most Plod, and less likely to land you in court.

I own a CRKT Mini Tighe or whatever, I just recently got it and I'm in school so I don't have it on me, but I like it so far. My buddy has a $70 Buck knife and brags on it hardcore, mine cost me only $50 and its done well so far. Granted I only use it for everyday use and a little light work, but I like it. I was also told they have one of the strongest spring loaded systems out (mines assisted opening) and I would agree, I love it. :)

I say crkt m16-13sf, and so far its the best. The carson flippers acts as a wave feature and automatically opens when i take it out. Sure the thumbs studs are a pain, but who actually uses them. I dont. I just pushed down on the carson flipper and it beautifully slides open. An extra flick can make it open faster.

Best of all, i got it for $40.

Hope this helped
