While I am waiting for my bonus from work so I can order my BM806D2, I figured I would obtain another less expensive knife to play with.

Given the choice, which would you get and why...

#1 CRKT M16...any version

or

#2 CRKT M18...any version

Also, specify if you would go with plain or serrated and why. Thanks...

i would go with the m16 because they look cooler. the *1 series has aus8 also, which is better than aus6, and it has the LAWKS system. the carson flipper is a blast and available on both, but i think the m16 just looks better. i think that the *1 is only available in partially serrated tanto....but not 100% sure

I threw an order in for the titanium M16. Didn't really want the serrations but what the heck. Didn't feel like waiting on the back order for the plain M16. Also, never owned a titanium handled knife...figured it would be worth the novelty.

I prefer the M16-03 of the two you mentioned - I like the way it handles better than the M18 which just seemed a little awkward to me.

Generally I prefer plain edge to the serrations.

I prefer the CRKT BladeLOCK over either one, for the same reason as above.

I remember reading somewere that the serated CRKT knives are chisel ground, can anyone confirm this? That's enought make me go with a plain blade.

Andyp,
Partially serrated CRKT’s are not chisel ground. Please, let’s not confuse terminology, differently we will speak each about another matter and do not understand each other completely.
Chisel ground blade is ground on one side (usually on right one, improper for right-hand user) and the other side (usually left) is completely flat, exactly like chisel.
All CRKT blades (excepting KISS series knives) are ground symmetrically, on the both sides. So they are not chisel ground.

More than likely the confusion source is that the partially serrated blades are sharpened only on right side, where the serrations are done. In my opinion it is also improper side for both serrations and single side sharpening what I do not like at all. However you always can resharpen such blade to conventional both sided sharpening. This would require just some skills, patience and decent whetstone, coarse diamond one would do the job the best.
In opposite – it is impossible to regrind chisel ground blade.

Edited: opppsss, sorry, this should be corrected. Really right side of chisel ground blade is flat and left one is ground. I have written the original post in morning, probably not being waken up completely.

True! Though kind of nit-picky :D

Let me restate that the EGDE is chisel ground on the 50/50 (Happy? :D )

I have the M16 14LE, which is the "big dog" 1*law enforcement tanto. It is partially serrated, but I think they might offer a smaller 1*spear point blade that is a plain blade and 1*. I love the knife! I am very happy w/ the quality(very solid and a very thick blade), it opens very smooth w/ either the carson flip or the thumb stud. The LAWKS is a pretty good idea too. Although, if you are left handed I would not recommend this knife- the single liner offsets the thumb stud slightly; you can still open it but it is easier w/ the right hand. I like the tini coating on the 1* blade and the AUS8 isn't too shabby. I believe the carbon fibre and the titanium versions come w/ AUS118 blade steel if you don't care for inferior Aus8 edgeholding. I wouldn't pay anymore than $55 for an M16, unless CF or Ti. The M16 comes in so many differet materials, sizes, blade stlyes, you have to find the right one for the job.

As for the M18, I have held one a few times at knife shops and was not what I expected. It just has a different blade style and grippy material inset into the aluminum scales, and costs ~$20 more than an M16(which I thought felt better in my hand). you can only choose different colors of the M18 and it only comes partially serrated.

Its all up to you, I would recommend holding and operating each one to see which fits you better. Either way both of these knives are excellent deals, I am a big fan of CRKT. sorry the post was so long.

I had the m16, and maybe it's just the one I owned. The liner lock was terrible.bit me real good. Liked the flipper a lot, but would want the lawks for sure.

I've got a fairly new CRKT M16-O3Z that I like a lot. Being very inexpensive, too, I don't mind putting the flipper through it paces (not that it'd be a problem with an expensive one, but I do tend to baby my customs which I probably shouldn't).
It's very sharp and fits the hand very well. The steel may not be the greatest ever, but at that price it works very well and I haven't had a problem with it doing some light duty. I'm sure that it'll perform well with medium chores as well, but it's about perfect for its intended application anyway so who cares.

Sounds like somemore satisfied customers, but IMHO I would've spent ~$10 more and gotten the aluminum M16 instead of the zytel just because you get the AUS8 instead of the AUS6, but I guess it really doesn't matter since you guys are satisfied for what you are using it for.:D
