CRKT M16 which blade type and handle type?

Hello,

I know nothing about knifes and this is my first post.
I'm looking at a CRKT M16 model. I plan on useing it for carry around and simple cutting stuff. Nothing fancy. Just to replace me old gerber pocket knife.

My main question is what balde type is better? The plain blade or the tanto blade? Also what about serrations? Do I want/need them?

As for the handle I think I like the Aluminum one as it's thinner but I also like the Zytel one as it's cheeper. Any thoughts on the handle type?

Thanks,
Brad

Brad,

Welcome to the forums!

If it were me I'd go for the carbon-fiber handled spear point model. Smaller size, lighter and possibly less aggressive looking. If I couldn't find one of those I'd go for the Al handled for the reasons you menationed. The spear point (in my opinion) lends itself a little more to general utility. As for the serrations, that's totally up to you. Partial serrations are nice because they rip through rope and fiberous material with ease. Plain edge is nicer for more detailed cutting and again, don't look as aggressive.

Whatever you decide, enjoy the knife - the M-16 is just about the best you'll find in that price range.

I agree with Ghecko about the utility of the spearpoint blade, but I have an M-16-02Z (Zytel handle, plain tanto blade) for sale in the Exchange section of the forum (see the link above). Like New In Box, as they say and inexpensive, besides. Regards, Jon

I really pfer the tanto/hlaf serrated in zytel. The Aluminum is really nice, but it is big, which, unless it is a knife you are using at work or something, you may not want to carry that big of a blade. The Carbon Fibre is "light", more $$$ and it does not have the "flipper" feature, which has been a drawback for some.

I picked the M16 in aluminum with spear point. It is very nice, and has made it through some pretty tough jobs.
The blade sharpens easily and holds an edge fairly well.

I have an M16-14, (Large Aluminum, Tanto W/partial serations.
This is a great knife. I especially like the knifes flipper opening feature. It is a large knife and it is true that for finer type cutting chores the spear point would be a better choice. But for general utility, it has been a good knife. I would definately suggest the aluminum w/flipper. Other than that it is the eye of the beholder. So to speak. Good luck........

Thanks Guys for all your replys.
Learned some things, but still have some additional questions.
I have been looking for info on this M16 knife all over the internet and have found conflicting info. So, I'm confused and maybe someone can set me straight.

I want the smallest possible M16 knife with the flipper thingie. First question is the Zytel m16 02z smaller the the aluminum m16 02?
From what I understand the 02 is the plain blade and the 12 is the serrated blade. Meaning a "0" is plain and a "1" is serrated?
but is a plain blade a tanto blade or just a straight blade?

So, does the aluminum handle come with the plain blade and not the tanto? or is it just a tanto with or without serrations?

For the flipper feature can I get an alumimun handle now and get the flipper? Some web sites say the flipper is not avaiable on the aluminum as of yet but CRKT web site says it's avaiable.

Thanks in advance for all the great info.

Thanks,
Brad

Plain refers to the edge. A "plain edge" is ground evenly with no serrations. Serraded edge is what it says: with those toothy serrations. Combo edge (combination) is a mix of the two.

Spear point and tanto refer to the tip. Tanto is the geometric one with straigt angles, while spear point has the sweeping curves leading to the tip.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks Guys,

As I said before this is my first real knife so I'm thankfull for all the information and advice. I'm also concerned that the M16 might be alittle on the large size and scarry looking side. I also have made up my mind that I want a drop point blade and not a Tanto. So right now I'm considering other knifes like the CRKT Point Guard.

I have read all the reports on this web site about the Point Guard but if anybody wants to add there thoughts please do so.

I think the Point Guard looks like a good all around knife. I plan on getting the smaller one and with a drop point blade without serrations. I like the look of this knife. It looks simple and is light weight.

So convince me this is a better deal considering size, weight and price then the M16

Thanks,

Brad
