CRKT M4 - good Buy?

-Foxxtrot
I own both the M4 and the M16. I like both of those knives. What do you think the knife will mostly be used for? It just depends on whether you like a tanto blade or drop-point.

The M4 is a solid knife that's a great size for EDC. The option of being able to convert it from assisted to non-assisted in a handy option and the Autolawks is well....either you love it or you hate it. Overall though it's got good steel, plently of blade for the size and prettyl thin i think.

pretty solid knife, the m4 is. I would advise, that if you're using the assist, to use the clip (tip down) and not just drop it into your pocket. i got a decent bite one day doing that. It doesn't take much to open it at all. I don't have much experience with assisted openers, but this one flings out pretty aggressively.

There's a thread on here somewhere about how to remove the autoLawks without alot of work. I really don't mind it, so I left mine on.

It looks to be an okay knife, though I think you can get a lot better for the $$$.

I like carrying knives that are light weight. I also like Cold Steel's AUS8 more than I CRKT's
AUS8, which I find doesn't take quite the edge of the CS knives. As far as styling goes, I'd much
prefer the titanium M16-14T (third from top in photo). It's a beautiful knife and has a great
feel to it. I also like the M21-04 (second from top).

Well, I was drooling when a sporting goods store nearby advertised the CRKT Howard Viele Wasp (large) on closeout for $25, but when I tried it out it just felt too thick and heavy (and a little stiff) for my pocket (I didn't realize titanium could weigh so much! Maybe it was the additional G10...). Since the M4 weighs even more than the Wasp it wouldn't suit me.
They had some M16 and M21 models also, which are a lot lighter; the mgr said those never went on sale as they were perrenial good sellers.

Of the group up there the top knife is one of my all time favorite CRK&T's. Wasn't it originally called the M-18, or has it always been the M-21?

I have always been suspicious about the fact that CRKT's liner locks were so faulty that they felt the need to add a lock to the lock so it would stay put.

I used to be really interested in getting an M-21-04 but that dissipated after handling other types of AO knives. YMMV

I really liked the M16 and M21 series, I had the aluminum ones but had to unload them several years ago. I checked out a zytel M16, and it was okay, except for the safety LAWKS. Maybe I'm just an idiot, but I could definitely foresee accidentally closing the knife on my hand, closing it one handed, after disengaging the auto LAWKS.

BTW, even with serrations (I hate serrations), the M4's that I have seen look and perform great. W/O the auto LAWKS, of course ;).
