Ok, you guys are going to hate me for not having the ability to post pics here, but I'll try and be as descriptive as possible.
As many folks here may know, I received a less than satisfactory CRKT Corkum First Strike. (See thread below.) Anyway, after some discussion, Patrick Gottsch of CRKT suggested a trade for this new model called the M60. It just arrived today. Am I happy now? YES!! I am well-pleased with this knife, to say the least. I think CRKT has a winner with this one. A brief description before I get into the details is the M60 is a fixed blade, sheath knife of the "tactical" variety.
To start off with, if the saber grip is your favorite, as it is mine, this knife is for you. The handle is designed with this in mind. It will just FIT perfectly into your hand with this grip. There is a raised "guard", which is actually part of the handle, where your thumb rests. And there is checkering there, actually more like hash marks, for your thumb to gain purchase on and grip. For your index finger, the guard, again, part of the handle, there is a perfect rest. The "guard" is assymetrical; it is diagonal to the blade with the thumb rest extendeding slightly over the spine of the blade. The grips are full slabs of a tough, hard synthetic. I'm not a real good judge of these things, but it appears to be harder than zytel. The blade is a full tang and the handles are cut to fit the tang. So, in other words, the blade itself forms the guard and the grips also lend themselves to it as well. The hash marks for the thumb are not only into the handle material, but the tang of the blade at that point. The grips follow the tang at all points. The grips are fully checkered in a honeycomb checker pattern. At the pommel, there is a metal pipe reinforced hole for a wrist cord and the butt of the handle curves down the cup the pinky finger. The grips are thick without being bulky and the knife fits my hand perfectly and comfortably. Due to the innovative thumb rest, control of knife is great.
The blade itself is slightly thicker than 1/8" and 4 3/8" long from the end of the grip. This particular one is a comb blade. The blade is 1 1/4" wide at the start of the edge. The upper spine is clipped in a false edge clear back to where the serrations start. The blade style I got is a spear point, which is what I asked for. The choice was between spear point and tanto. The blade is ti-nitride coated in the style of the M1. The blade is SHARP. It is shaving sharp the entire length, to include the serrations and sharpened primarily on the side where the serrations are cut. I don't know what kind of steel it's made of, because it didn't come with any booklet. This knife is not even on their website yet. The edge is aggressively sharp, to say the least. The knife is heavier than it looks, yet, still superbly balanced.
The sheath is what I generally call "ballistic nylon" and cordura. Where the blade goes has a kydex insert. It appears to be sewn in. The sheath has an outer accessory pocket with removable flap that velcros to the inside and then the outside. This would make retrieving objects out easier since the entire flap can be removed. There are two snap loops to keep the knife in, an upper and a lower near the guard of the blade. The upper loop is removable. The sheath comes as "drop holster/thigh rig". It can be worn on the thigh in its drop down configuation (and has an adjustable belt loop for that) or you can remove the thigh drop loop and wear it directly on the belt alone. It also has two straps for the thigh to secure the sheath and they are removable as well if you wish to just wear it on the belt without the drop configuration. There are lanyard holes at the top and bottom of the sheath.
I REALLY like this knife. I give it 10 points out of 10. CRKT did me right on this knife exchange!
