Got a CRKT Model 4 recently. A nice, solid knife but I felt the black plastic scales weren't what it should have, particularly since it's the classic Carson design. So, I sent it to STR for some linen ivory micarta scales. I think they turned out great, really making the knife look more upscale.

STR does nice work.

Yeap , one hell of a job and totally upclassed your knife.

How do you like the knife overall ? I'm considering buying one.

You know I had not seen that one before or really even heard it talked about and it is an impressive package even if it did come with FRN scales. Of course I saw it after Nate removed the forced on you lock for the lock that is automatic these days from CRKT. Nothing like automatic seat belts to turn you off huh? Thats what it reminds me of anyway. I do like the fact that it can be removed but the truth is I don't mind having the LAWKS system at all, I just don't like it being automatice at all forcing you to take all or nothing from the sounds of it.

Otherwise its a super knife and knowing CRKT probably a good price point making it a fine value and EDC for the money spent.

By the way there are more pictures of that one on my forum if you are interested. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=810

Thanks Nate and everyone for the compliments. I do appreciate it.

I was very pleased when I got it at the heft and solid overall construction of the knife. It has nice positive lockup, smooth action and just felt good in my hand. The fact that I love the Carson Model 4 gave me a jones for the knife since I first heard CRKT was making them, so I was going to try one regardless. Once I knew I was going to keep it I told myself it had to have nicer handles.

I acutally got it gently used from someone else who had already taken the trouble of removing the AO and auto LAWKS features. I knew I didn't want the M4 with either of those (not like I'd ask Kit Carson to make a custom Model 4 with such features, you know what I mean ), so my choices would have been to buy one new and immediately disassemble the whole knife or wait for a totally manual version to be made. Luckily, I found this one, already taken care of in the manner I wanted.

I agree with STR that the added safety of LAWKS is a nice thing to have if you want it, but for it to not be a user's option about engaging it isn't so hot. Plus it makes closing the knife one handed a bit tricky at first if you always have to release the safety. For some folks I imagine it negates one handed closing entirely.
