I just handled a my tighe, and loved it. I'm considering buying one, since i don't yet have a frame lock. I notice the AO mech looks removable. Does anyone have one and what is the blade steel like? i was looking at AUS 8's before. Thanks...imma new guy, btw

The My Tighe is an AUS 6 knife. It's a handsome knife, but many don't like it. For the price you can do better. It also may not be in production any more.

can you recommend anything as I am at a loss. I am really close to purchasing a Benchmade apparition, but i'm more of a tactical carry kinda guy. My thought is to get the apparition, and replace the scales with g10, or carbon fibre. I can't see spending so much and getting molded scales. I'd like an AO opener, but one that i can carry tip down and blade pointing outwards (away from my crotch). I don't like the SOG's...

Datgum, the Benchmade Apparition is a damn good knife. It's worlds away from any knife with an AUS 6 blade and...did I mention it's a damn good knife? I, myself, carry a Cold Steel 4-inch Voyager with a serrated blade. There are many knives I like better, but none that are as light and as tough. I have a Benchmade Ascent with a 4-inch blade and it's also a very good, very light knife with ATS-34 stainless blade in the $40-something range (eBay).

I gave all my nephews My Tighes for Christmas and they love them; but then, none are real knife afficianados.

The Cold Steel Voyager, like I said, is light weight, fits in my back pocket and cuts anything I need to cut without a problem. I originally bought a Cold Steel Night Force, but I can really tell the difference in weight, plus the Voyager has very comfortable grips.

Given everything, I'd sure go for the Apparition first, the Cold Steel Voyager second, and the Benchmade Ascent (4-incher) plain edge third. I think the CS is a little more of a workhorse all things considered and more available at a good price, but you can't go wrong with any of the three.

Good huntin'!

The "My Tighe" is a relatively new knife from CRKT, and has a blade steel of 1.4116, not AUS-6. http://www.crkt.com/mytighe.html

Maybe you meant the "Tighe Tac", which is no longer produced by CRKT, and has a blade steel of AUS-6M? http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_...and_tool/crkt_tighe_tac_large_plain_edge.html

CRKT no longer uses AUS-6M on any of their knives.

Best wishes,

You are correct. I was thinking of their "Tighe Tac" series. My mistake.

The "My Tighe" has a cool-looking 1.4116 blade which, unfortunately, has a carbon content just a little bit more than AUS 4. The knife has a new look which should appeal to those who like the "melted grip" look. It ain't for me, but some folks may like it. In the meantime, I hope CRKT will go back to using AUS 6 instead of AUS 4. Thanks for the catch!

Thanks...It's still tough. I want a frame lock, but a good blade. The Cold Steel Voyager series is Zytel and rivets. Even if the blade steel is good, i need one that i can take apart, or replace parts as needed. My S&W black ops has so much blade play, it's ridiculous, but it has taken some abuse. I am looking to replace it with an EDC knife that won't break. I am thinking the Apparition would be the best bet, and if i beg Benchmade...maybe they will sell me some G-10 or carbon scales :)

Benchmade makes some mighty nice knives and from what you say, I'd sure go with it. Spyderco makes very decent knives, but they're just not normally the configuration I like. I've never needed to take apart any of my Cold Steel Voyagers, nor have any of my friends (some have used them for years). Knives that can be taken apart usually need to come apart now and again. On many, though, all I've had to do is tighten them every now and again.

Benchmade has a wide variety of very good knives and they may be the way to go. But when you decide, please let us know what you end up with.

no? But, damn...that is cool!
I have already ordered the standard apparition. I am replacing the molded scales with black micarta, since it will be my edc knife and i want something grippier
