Hey, I'm pretty new to these forums, and was wondering if anyone has the low-down on this knife, especially the steel they're using. I found that it is 1.4116, 55-57 HRC steel, but I don't know the numberings for steel yet. I also read that this is AUS8 steel, which I'm a big fan of, but just wanted to be sure. Cheers.

According to A. G. Russell it is 420J2

I like the My Tighe design, both the normal and Mini. I almost bought one, but held off because of the steel. My friend ended up getting one and it's a nice folder. It feels good in the hand, good attention to detail, very attractive, and very fast AO. My friend hardly uses it though so I still don't have much feedback on the blade steel. It has fairly low carbon and isn't very hard, but it's a German steel, so I don't know if that helps it's performance beyond what the numbers show (like as happens with Sandvik). If you get one, definitely let us know what you think about the steel. There doesn't seem to be much information or reviews on 1.4116.

The My Tighe has a 1.4116 blade with a 420J2 frame.

It pays to be sure before buying because CRKT commonly offers the same model in different blade steels to hit different price points. Like their M16 line can be found in AUS8, AUS6 and AUS4.

Messersmith - what's your impressions of the 1.4116 steel? How's edge holding? Ease of sharpening? etc.?

msiley - I'm familiar with the specs for 1.4116, but the specs can't really tell the story. Take 13C26 for example, numbers aren't very impressive (honestly, numbers look pretty crappy), but it cuts like crazy because it's a powder steel and so pure and fine grained, characteristics that specs just don't show.

Messersmith - if you don't mind, I'd like to see your thoughts on 1.4116 once you've had a chance to use your My Tighe more.

Thanks for all your thoughts and advice guys. I think I'm gonna get it, simply for the fact that it is such a nice looking blade, AND it's a CRKT, which since I've started collecting, I've become to like a lot of their stuff, very decent quality. If they're offering this knife w/ this steel, I'm sure it'll do fine. And yes I will by all means let ya'll know how I like it once I try it out :) Cheers.

P.S.- JSR, did your friend get the mini or normal size? I myself am looking @ the normal.

He got the normal. I've handled both and the mini is perfect for EDC...just under 4" closed. The normal isn't too large either and it's fairly deep pocket carry keeps it pretty well concealed. Unfortunately, despite my encouragement to my friend to use his My Tighe more, he hasn't carried it even a day as he's been too concentrated with the Kershaw he got at the same time.

Hmm, that's interesting. I'll have to go and see if the locla knife store here carries the My Tighe, I'm really curious as to how it feels and works in my hand. I think I'm gonna get the large just cause it's the only one carried by BudK.com, and They make it really hard not to buy knives from them. Cheers.

Well, it's been a few months since I bought the normal My Tighe, and it works beautifully for me. The steel holds up good, but then again I don't use my knives for a lot of heavy stuff. I'd recommend it, it also feels nice holding it, and the spring assist is great, my new EDC :) Cheers.

got mine today, paid $34 for it, from www.steepandcheap.com they put up crkt's occasionally.
i like it well enough, i took off the scales & rounded one portion down.
i actually like the looks quite well with no scales at all.. i may decide to carry it as such, but i'll need to make some modifications in the pocket clip area.

i'll carry it a bit, but my crkt m16-13z is still my EDC, except when i'm lifeguarding, then its a crkt BULL

...yeah, i got them all at similar discounts.

I have one as well. I found it to be "middle of the road" in terms of edge retention and ease of sharpening. I like the knife a lot but the scales have a sharpness to them around edges. I use my knives a lot and this knife will give you hots spots where the edge touches your hand. I may have to round them off like xxguitarist did.

if interested, the only one i bothered to round is the drill style one by the framelock drill hole towards the back of the handle, on the lock/pocket clip side.
it dug into my ring finger when flipping.

A.G. Russell must have made an error on the web site, because the steel is 1.4116. Decent stuff, and a nice knife.

Sorry folks, If you read the copy you will see that we got it right in that copy, then of course the person making the side bar messed up and put the handle steel in the place of the blade steel. We will fix it. Thanks for letting me know. A. G.

Thought some might be interested in what i did with my My Tighe.
scales are wenge, made them over the last couple days.
I'm no custom knifemaker, but i enjoyed this just the same.

and I retained clip function.
