SMKW recently had CRKT Mirage series folders on sale for $9.99 (and $14.99 for the Grey Ghost). They advertised the Apache II in ATS-34 for $19.99, but were sold out by the time I called. Anyway, I bought three for myself as well as several more for X-mas gifts.

I sort of had my doubts at those prices, but I had read some positive threads here and didn't want to pass up these deals. SMKW will take anything back no questions asked, so I'd have only been out the shipping if I didn't like them.

Well, anyway, I'm hooked. I ordered ten total, and every single one is well made. They open smoothly, lock up tight, and have a solid feel in hand. I touched up my three on my Sharpmaker, and now they are razor sharp.

That Grey Ghost was a fantastic deal, I think.

Now if they only didn't have "Taiwan" lasered onto the blades....

Just polish the blades, plus that'll get rid of the BB finish.

They are great deals though, especially those Grey Ghosts.

Jeez, I just read another current thread on CRKT. I really wasn't aware that bead blasted blades are more prone to rust.

And I bought 5 Grey Ghosts to give as gifts. Oh well, it's a nice knife. How the recipients maintain it is their business.

Any tips on how I can best polish my blade to a satin finish? Its a great knife, and AUS8 is pretty good steel. If I can make it more rust resistant by polishing it, I'll go for it.

I've used those rust erasers before to remove bead blasting. The rust eraser doesn't totally polish the blade, but significantly wears down bead blast. I'm pretty happy with the results. You can get rust erasers at SMKW.

I was pretty disappointed to see the bead blast also. I've always thought that the original Mirage blades looked fantastic with the almost mirror/high satin finish.

Am going to place my fate in the hands of TufGlide. Wetted both sides of the blades with the TG with my finger, and lubed the pivots too. The more I think about it tho, am going to use a water paint brush or something to do the liners too. Have had a little trouble with liners getting spotty lately on a couple knives I don't use. Am intending the GGs as "collection" types at this point.

Was also sorry I didn't think enuff about the model numbers on SMKW's site to realize that the wharncliffes were the medium size, not the large. But, have always liked the medium size anyhow, and those wharncliffes are really slick. The blade shape looks so useful. However, it isn't the pointiest wharncliffe I've ever seen. Still, a damn good knife for $10.
