I've had a CRKT Hissatsu folder for a pretty long time and I really like most things about it except for the fact that it's a little hard to open with my left hand. It's OK now though after wearing it in so it's no big deal. Still I thought I would try removing the assisted opening function to see if there would be any difference.

I've heard before that it's quite possible to remove the AO on the CRKT folders on your own, but I didn't know it would be this simple and that you don't even need to open the knife to do it! You just loosen a screw inside the open construction of the knife and slide the spring out of the butt of the handle. Now the blade opens up like a charm.

I'm not usually very fond of AO.
Extra moving parts, springs that have a risk of bending or breaking etc. I really like this type however, it feels like CRKT had my thoughts in mind when they designed it. Like I said, it's very easy to remove if you feel like it and has a very open construction to simplify cleaning. It has only one part, the spring, which only consists of a thick metal bar and has no risk of breaking at all. It would probably never bend neither, but even if it did, you would just have to bend it back again and it would be as good as new.

The only downside I can see (except for the slight hardness of left hand opening, which really has more to do with the construction of the liner lock and the thumb ramp than the AO) is that it probably would be impossible to have a flipper on a knife with this kind of AO, because the spring is in the way. It's no big deal though..

the benchmade apparitions also use the same type of AO system. its a good way to make a reliable AO.

Ahaa, that's good to know, I kinda like the Apparition and Benchmade in general. By the way, who was it that first came up with this device, CRKT or Benchmade? I'm guessing Benchmade.

For the $ I just love my Hissatsu, and I was sad they disc. the little Ichi's, thick frame locks, built like tanks, once you learn the flick a marble technique, it's a no brainier, G.
