I'm thinking of getting a small point guard as a project knife. I want to replace the scales; is it all-screw construction so that the scales can be removed? Also, any other comments from those who have owned the knife are welcome: pros, cons, etc. I've done a search but updated comments on quality, durability, are always helpful. Tx - FF

The point guard is a pretty good knife for the money, something that can be said for just about everything in the CRKT line. It has reasonable edge holding, nice balance, good blade shape (enough point and enough belly for most jobs). The LAWKS seemed like a gimmick when i first encountered it but it works okay for its intended function to prevent accidental lock disengagement. Wish the handle was a little more ergonomic but that's about all my complaints.

I have had both a large and small versions of the Point Guard but I liked the large better. I had difficulty manipulating the thumb-disk on the small and sold it soon after as the opening arc a little too tight for me. You might want to try both before buying. If buying the small, you might want to get plain edge only as there isnt enough blade length for a combo edge (too little of each), at least for my tastes. I still have the large and it is my "beater" EDC that i use for just about everything. Lockup is still tight after 2+ years usage. I also like the CRKT M16 which I think is a slightly better knife with the inclusion of the opening flipper.

On my large point guard the scales can be removed (torx screws).

Hope that helped some.

Wow, talk about memories. The small Pointgaurd was my first one-hander.

Pros -

Smooth as hell on opening.

Ambidextrous thumb disk (i'm a righty, but still find this good for when my right hand is occupied)

Cons -

Too small for my hands... I have normal size hands, so I imagine if you do too, or have larger this wouldn't feel perfect ergonomically for you.

Aus 6. I have always despised this steel becuase I can't seem to ever get that GREAT edge on it like I can with others. This may be only me though.

DO NOT GET THE PARTIALLY SERRATED! I was younger and thought it looked cool. There is definitely not enough room on that small blade for both.

All in all, it's not a bad buy for the money. Personally I would never get it again with all the other selection out there. You really might be better served with:

Spyderco Delica, Calypso Jr., S.S. Dragonfly, ETC.
Benchmade Mini-Grip

or for less $ Kershaw
For a project knife though, maybe it's the way to go. IDK.
Hope I was of some help.

there are definitely better knives out there, but i need a small knife that's cheap since I'm unemployed. Has the SS fly but it felt awkward in my hand. Guess I'll have to find someplace to handle the small PG before I buy. thanks!

get the bigger one!
I have the big one since a year and it's a really good knife, but still "small". if you have normal or big hands the small one will feel like nothing.
I had problems with the liner lock, but crkt sent me a new one and everything is o.k.
edge holding is ok for me.
