I just came back from a trip to the knife shop and they had a CRKT Pointguard on display. Looked like a handy little knife. Anyone have one? I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. If there are any threads with reviews point me to 'em. Thanks.

I recall a friend of mine had it, and it's a decent knife.
However, beware of the old CRKT finishes - bead blasting - tends to hold in moisture, and it will cause rusting on the blade.
Also my experiences says that don't disassemble the knives. You might have a hard time recentering the blade.

they are OK, if ya could get a good deal, go for it!

a good deal would be $35 or so, imho, if new.

CRKT's are good knives, but not very expensive. no real cons on this one, IIRC they are kinda heavy compared to say a BM AFCK, and i didnt really care for the slots in the handle but thats a personal thing.

the one i had i gave to my bro in law for X mas. he loves the thing.

Not a bad knife for the money. I find it too light though. Those Zytel handles weigh just about nothing.

Edge retention is not known to be the greatest on AUS6M however it's also known to be easy to re-sharpen.

Mine now resides with my ex-girlfriend.

Thanks for the replies, gave me some things to think about.

Interesting. $US35 would be about $AUS52 at today's rates. The local knife shop wants about $AUS120 for the one they have. Sounds like it might be a little overpriced for what I'm getting. I guess if I decide I want it I'd be better off ordering online even with shipping included.

I had a small one. Sent the first one back for bad lockup. Sold the replacement, because I just found it hard to put any trust in the lock after that.

I liked mine quite a bit. The only problem that I had with it was the liner lock was very abrasive on my thumb. The serrated liner really chewed through if you like to open and close your knives like i did, repeatedley.

I had a Point Guard a while back. I had to send it back to CRKT because the liner lock was defective. They sent me a replacement and it worked fine.

The Point Guard is a decent knife. I really like the design but don't care for the BB finish or the AUS-6 much.

The Point Guard is a decent design. Sharp, good handle, LAWKS.

There are flaws. The steel is comparatively soft. At it's price point, that's fairly common. The liner wears fairly quickly. My sample liner had full lock wear in about 18 months of light warehouse box cutting. Blade's still good though.

I didn't like the thumb disk at all. That's just personal preference.

Thanks for the replies. I get the feeling that, while it's not a bad a bad little knife for the money, it's not really all that robust and has a few problems. I think I might pass on that one. The next one I want to look at is the Spyderco Native III.

The CRKT Pointguard is a decent enough knife for the cash. I really like the basic design and it is just about the perfect size for my needs. Nothing spectacular about it though, other than it costs maybe 1/10th of the price of a custom Crawford pointguard. You probably wont be disappointed with it. I've owned one for about two years and carry it now and then.

Hope some of my rambling helped...

i too have a friend that has one, and i think it is crap. light, and feeble feeling. has bad lockup. finish is bad after a few months. too small. and the opening disk on blade is terrible.

i like most CRKT knives... but this is the exception to the list

sorry to be so rough :(

I carried one for a while. Not a bad knife, for the money. Only paid around $30-35.00 for it. For day to day light work it will serve you well. Today I carry a BM 705. Much better built knife.
