I got a CRKT 3.5" Pointguard last week and thought i would share a few thought with you about the knife:

1)boy is the action stiff - they(CRKT) must have taken the customs seizure seriously, as it is impossible to flick it open unless ya loosen the pivot screw so much ya get blade play - why so stiff? are you peoples knives that hard to open? this is my 4th CRKT folder(2XM16,Kasper) and all the others, at least after a while snap open easily - we shall see - not much progress after numerous snaps, white lighting, etc .

2)other than that the knife is pretty good - came almost dull, but it sharpened right up with my GATCO and DMT hones - its fairly light weight, and carries in the pocket well - would compare it with the BM AFCK in size, weight, etc - but for $40, hey a pretty good knife - wasnt as impressed as with my C/KFF, but it is a good knife for the money, IMHO

so check 1 out, and try to get 1 w/a action looser than mine if ya wanna snap it - ill keep on trying to loosen it ......

I am a little bit surprised regarding the dull blade, because all of my CRKT knives were “hair popping sharp” OTB. Did you bought a used Point Guard?
Please tell me that you did, do not detract my positive opinion about the quality of CRKT knives!

At closed folder, the tip of the blade is only slightly engulfed, I think this is the reason for the stiff open mechanism.

I recently picked up a large Point Guard, and found it to be sharp and very easy-opening (maybe you got a bad example?). I agree the blade tip is only very slightly engulfed by the handle when folded, as a small hole in my thumb can attest to!

I bought the large CRKT Point Guard and found the knife opened quite freely and the liner lock perfectly registered.

Quite a nice folder for the price. It takes a keen edge easily, but seems to require frequent edge maintenance if used for such tasks as cutting cardboard or whittling.

Great design with not-great steel.

The pointguard I had was razor sharp out of the box, and opened smooth and buttery, much nicer than the price range would suggest. I gave mine to a fellow officer who has carried it on and off duty for several months and is very satisified. He has me sharpen it (I seem to be the substation knife sharpener) about once a month, and it always pops back to a razor edge with no problem.
Stay sharp,
Chad

hi - no i got a new 1 from iSKS - it was sharp, for sure, but not THAT sharp - i dont know i never get knives sharp out of the box, it seems - recently got a MT SOCOM, and it is 1 of the only knives, NIB, that was SHARP OOB - just bad luck i guess - and certainly didnt mean to bad mouth CRKT, they are damn good products, and would buy some of them at 2X the price - eg the C/KFF - it is my second favorite knife, for EDC, behind my SIFU - but not 1 that i have gotten has been sufficiently sharp that i would carry it w/out touching it up - and for that matter nor has any emerson, BM, spydie(except serrated) etc - other than the MT, the sharpest knife i have ever gotten, OOB, was a cammillus arclite - go figure?

I have the small Point Guard. The only problem with this knife is that the thumb disk is too close to the knife handle. Maybe the larger version is better (I've got normal sized hands).

Haven't tried the larger PG. Got the small one, opened quite easily, fairly sharp. But, I hate the disk on top of the blade. As Thomas said, it's too close to the pivot or something. Anyhow, gave it to my son. Have to admit the basic design never has thrilled me much.

Check out the thread nearby regarding the Wasp. Am beginning to lose some of my fondness for CRKT. Having read that, it's one I won't add to my collection, and the Ryan is the second. Can't believe CRKT abandoned the Apache in favor of either or both those knives. It even had good steel.

hi - well its loosened up a LITTLE now, ya can flick it open most of the time - and i notice too that the disc is too close to the handle, its hard to slip your thumb in there - i dont know, wish they would make some cut outs on the C/KFF like the pointguard though - but the disc is definitly a problem now, or the grip is too high, for me anyway - i was worrying about flicking it so much i wasnt looking at the disc that close, but you do notice it..

Hi SIFU1A!

I've enjoyed my Point Guard as well. Check this post from Serguisz Mitin on the CRKT Point Guard.

He points out what I felt with the LAWKS on this blade that it quite naturally enages when you go to saber grip. I'd really love it if it had G10 grips and better steel too. But like CRKT knives, it's a lot of bang for the buck just as it is now.

I guess I'm not the only one who didn't like the PG's ergos. I had the small one, and I too had problems with the disk placement. In truth, I've never met a disk I really liked. I shaved down a ramp (like the KFF), but it didn't help much. Wound up trading it away here.

The quality was very good, it just didn't work for me ergonomically.

I have had the large and small. I like both very much.....well the clip was not that great.

Have you noticed that time flies like the wind, but fruit flies like bananas ?

I have the large, plain edge, and it came very sharp. I like the overall size and shape. It is a virtual dead ringer for the "real" Point Guard.

As a result of my positive impressions, I will pick up the "real deal"
