CRKT ROLLOCK Mini-Review
Here's another one from the archives. The now discontinued Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) is an Allen Elishewitz design http://www.elishewitzknives.com/default.asp and features a unique blade locking system. Instead of opening on a pivot like most folding knives, the "ROLLOCK" blade slides forward along a track in the handle. The track travels down at the front of the knife and as the blade drops down, a locking tab clicks into place. Functionally, it works like an out-the-front automatic, but it's powered only by the motion of your thumb.
The locking system on the made in Taiwan ROLLOCK is innovative, but unfortunately, the knife doesn't have much else going for it. The AUS 6 steel is pretty average and the shiny stainless steel and blue translucent scales look pretty cheap. The flip side is that it IS cheap. I paid $15 or so for my when it was new and you can still find the Rollock on the auction site for $15-$30.
