I recently purchased CRKT Ryan 7 and a CRKT Polkowski Kasper Companion. I was initially very sceptical about a "Made in Taiwan" anything. Well, let me tell you, I was most impressed with the CRKT quality in general. In my opinion, the most bang for your buck in a knife....period. Yeah sure the Benchmades are fantastic etc etc etc. But not everybody has that sort of money to lay out for a knife or three.

My primary concern for a knife/knives were 1. Survival/Emergency situations 2.Everyday use and 3. Self defense? Well a gun is far more effective than a knife if the chips are down...LOL. A knife is only a secondary defense weapon in my opinion, unless you are a knife martial artist, it doesn't matter. This is merely my opinion.

Both knives are carried daily and are comfy generally and easy to carry mostly. I find the PK's internal belt sheath a bit too stiff and awkward mostly when replacing the knife in its sheath. You don't have to worry about it falling out!!! It holds an edge quite well and sharpens easily. Very nice to hold and light. A superb fixed blade of its size. Yeah sure, this one won't kill a 10ft Grizzly!!!!! Then again, I would not want to tackle a Grizzly with ANY knife!!!!!!LOL

The Ryan 7 is an absolute gem of a tactical folder. The only drawback is the slight scraping of the blade to the liner when the thumb is used. Flick it with the wrist, or use both thumbs and flip the knife open.....as smooth as silk. Lovely blade, good edge and well balanced. With LAWKS system of course. Not even folders twice the price have LAWKS!!!! That is the Lake and Walker Safety system turning the liner lock effectively into a fixed blade. The blade is 3.5" spear-cum-drop point and is razor sharp with a wide belly...holds edge well. Both my knives have a straight edge. I do not care for a serrated edge at all, especially for survival situations. A straight edge is far more versatile. Check out Doug Ritter's comments about this on www.equipped.com

A thumbs up for both these knives from me. They each score a solid 7/10.

My next knife will be the CRKT Ryan Plan B of course.

Welcome ThorTso! You now add to our limited number of South Africans/ex-South Africans on this forum.

I don't care too much for the 7 myself but I do like the companion a lot. Not too many are fond of the noisy Zytel sheath but I myself don't think it's all that bad. The numerous carry options grab my attention most.

get ya a custom sheath for that kasper, they are 100% better and cost $25 or so. EM me for the source, or do a search.......i promise, ya wont regret it - why CRKT sells the knife with 2 so so sheaths VS one good amazes me, an excellent knife saddled w/a crap sheath imho
