I have coming to me a CRKT S-2 folder and this leads me to a couple of questions. I am paying $35.00 for it but have seen in another post that they were, at one time, sold for $25.00.

What is wrong with them?

I mean you have a Titanium handle, frame lock knife with a blade made from ATS-34. Other knives of similar materials sell for considerably more. were theye poorly made? Did they have quality problems? What was the original price? They are a relatively attractive looking knife.

What am I missing? Could someone please provide me with the background on this knife? Thanks a lot for any assistance.

Jvan,

Nothing is wrong with them. They apparently were not profitable or competitive for CRKT to sell them at their suggested retail price so they discontinued the manufacture of them. I think they are a great bang-for-the-buck if you can find them.

I have the larger 3.75 inch model 7502 plain edge and it is very well made.

I owned a couple of those knives, and the only thing that bothered me(and, not really all that much) was the TAIWAN etched on the blade. Other than that, it was a quality knife. Oh yeah, mine also was partial serrated, that bothered me a little bit too. I'd kinda like to have a plain edge version for an inexpensive EDC, as a matter of fact.

I can't help thinking the "S" in S-2 always stood for "Sebenza"!

I'd prefer a CR to a CRKT, of course, but this is a terrific knife and $35 is a steal on these.

CRKT made the S-2 in three sizes. I have the middle size. I paid $55 for it and thought I got a good deal at the time (around July 2001). Smoky Mountain Knife Works has or had the large size for $25. I think this is a great deal. IMO the S-2 is a very well made knife but it is not perfect.

Good points about my knife – premium materials, very good fit and finish, open back design for easy cleaning, good grinds on the blade and a very sharp and even factory edge, smooth opening and closing, titanium handles and ATS-34 blade should last longer than the owner

Bad points about my knife – Blade is too thick, pocket clip is too stiff making it difficult to clip the knife on a pocket, clip holds the knife at an awkward angle making it difficult to get other things out of the pocket, while the knife looks good to me, I found the ergonomics poor, kind of uncomfortable to hold. The lock bar flexes up and down a little when the knife is open. I have read some complaints about this but the lock on mine seems very secure in the in and out direction and it has passed the spine whack test.

Bottom line – you can buy a better knife for more money but I don’t think you can buy a better knife for the same or less money.

Bingo. I was lucky enough to get one of these at the $25 clearance price, but the moment I held it I knew it wasn't for me. The thumbstud seems really awkwardly placed and the clip is terrible; very uncomfortable in the hand.

Oh well.

Good deal for the materials used in that knife.

I'd probably my small S2 from time to time if the clip wasn't so horrendous.
