CRKT Self Sharpener?

Has anyone ever heard of the CRKT Edgie or Edgie 2? It's a folder that supposedly has a diamond edged sharpener built into it. I've been wanting to purchase one to see if it's worth the money but I figured I'd ask if anyone else has already bought one and used it. I would like to know you guys' and gals' thoughts and opinions on this knife before I make a commitment to buying one.

I have just seen it and did not feel particularly attracted. Sort of do not need a knife which needs sharpening after every opening.

It continuously dulls the edge, actually. It's a very coarse sharpener that sharpens on one side only, and the blade is a chisel grind. The sharpener ends up rolling your edge over every time you close the knife, and so there's no point in trying to put a better edge on it. Good as a beater for breaking down boxes, but that's about it. I took one apart, removed the sharpener, converted the grind to a conventional "V" grind, and called it the "Wedgie" :p

Sounded like a really bad idea when I saw it. I wouldn't spend more than 5 bucks on it.

it doesnt seem to bad if they didnt use a 400 grit stone and use 420j2 blade steel

now i wouldnt mind it if they switched some something like 8cr, Aus 8/6, or 440c/b with a 800grit but i dont need a blade thatll dull after a few cuts on cardboard

Which is exactly why I thought it was a bad idea. Soft stainless, with a diamond hone that qualifies as coarse, and you're using a butter knife every time you pull it.

i bought an edgie 2 a month or so ago from amazon (well under $20, shipped). it's not a knife that'll serve as an EDC, but if you use a knife at work a lot to cut things like cardboard (or other relatively soft materials that can dull a knife) it's useful.

the blade stays sharp enough to scrape a patch of hair from your forearm (not popping the hair off like a good straight razor) and it easily catches a thumbnail almost vertically. i assume the reason it's a soft steel is so it's easy to sharpen.

JADP: i don't know about the original edgie, but the edgie 2 is not a chisel edge. the abrasive strips inside the handle are in a "V" shape, and clearly sharpen both sides of the blade.

i keep one in my back pocket most days, but still use my crkt m16-LE as my EDC. i think the edgie 2 is a good accomplishment, and is clearly a step above a box cutter.

The knife is cr@p and it's steel is cr@p
rather spend your money on a knife without a built in sharpener with a better steel
and learn to sharpen well with a stone

If you want to go CRKT there are many smaller knives with Aus 8 steel for that price

Looks like something I would not want to have near my house. (Preferably a minimum 48 yards away)

Straight up, it sounds like some kind of gimmick. Look on Youtube to see if there are any reviews of this knife. I can't imagine they would be too favorable.

For comparable prices I would go with Kershaw or Spydercos Byrd series... I have never been a huge fan of CRKTs, they have started offering that I find interesting though

I have one, mainly because I like sheepsfoot blades. It's okay, but it certainly isn't 'heavy-duty' by any means. The edge is rough ("toothy", I think it's called), the steel is soft. I have a Case Stockman with their 'Tru-Sharp' that will cut circles around the Edgie, and the edge lasts much longer.

The nice thing is you can take the knife apart and take the sharpening spring out, and put a regular bevel on the edge. Makes it a lot more useful in my opinion.

Sounds like a gimmick for people who can't:thumbdn: sharpen , anyone who knows anything i'm sure would agree  a 400 grit stone as well get a sharpmaker and and endura for under a $100 ar right around there. A smart monkey could prob use a sharpmaker:) problem solved. I didn't mean for that to sound rude or anything, its just a bad idea thats why u only have seen 1 like it

I agree that it might be a good alternative to a razor knife for someone who cuts boxes all day. But short of that a coarse DMT Diafold would do as well or better.
