CRKT Sharpener and Chisel Ground Blades

I have a CRKT knife sharpener that I'm having problems with. The issue is a CRKT Desert Cruiser with AUS8 stainless. The blade is a single blade grind and I have no idea how to sharpen it.

I assume that since the edge is only on one side of the blade, that I'm only sharpening that side of it, right? I've gotten down the locomotion movement and have tried both the utility guide and the fine guide, both without results. Either I'm dealing with really crappy steel or I'm doing something wrong.

My primary problem is that CRKT doesn't have any information in their "detailed" instructions for how to sharpen a chisel ground blade.

Questions:

1) Are the angles used on such a blade different from other types?
2) If not, what is the most likely reason sharpening is not happening?

My blade is so dull, not only will it not shave hair from my arm, I can't even feel an edge. Now it is polished. Would that make a difference?

Thanks!

BTW, all of CRKT's serrated blades in their folders are chisel ground. Why wouldn't they cover sharpening that type of blade in the instructions?

go to www.emersonknives.com they have a great tutorial on how to sharpen CG knives.

imho the easiest way to sharpen CG's is with a std flat benchstone and a leather strop, or a good steel, not with a sharpening system, as much as i like a sharpmaker its not the best tool to sharpen CG's.

just go to the EKI site and follow the instructions, its easy imho.

i would say ya are not using the correct angle.

I use a flat stone and sharpen the bevel side for CGs. Then I just cut off the burr on the other side. I havent had a lot of luck getting my CG knife super sharp but thats cause I only have 1 CG and I dont even use it.

What would be the correct angle? The problem with using a flat stone is that I don't know how to acquire the needed angle. It's kind of like photography. In the old days, you could give me the film speed and I could give you the f/stop and shutter speed without a meter. I also was a very good judge of distance. But now?

Ha! Sharpening systems are the only things I've ever used, guys, but I was getting nowhere trying to sharpen that damn blade! Kinda funny that CRKT would have a system that wouldn't work on a fair number of knives they make.

BTW, I read the Emerson site's information and while it's good, it's a bit like trying to write an article teaching someone to ice skate.

Begin on the shoulder of the bevel on the stone and then tip the edge down until you see that it lays flat with the stone. If you can keep the angle well you wont have to constantly check to make sure that you still have the right angle. Adjust the knife so that the bevel stays flat on the stone as you move the edge along the stone

Thank you. I'll try it. For the time being, I'm giving up on diamond
stones. They scratch the daylights out of the edge. Ceramic stones
seem like the best.
