I already posted this as a tangent on a main post, but I thought I would give it its own thread . . .

I really like the side hawg designs because they are cool little knives, they seem pretty impractical due to steel and the very design that makes them so cool!
I am very interested to hear anyone's thoughts or experiences on this line of knives, particularly the original model.
Thanx.

There is a good article on those in an older issue of Blade , I believe the author said he though it was just a little to small , but overall he did find it handy as he cut thru a variety of materials.

Thanks rebeltf, I read that article, which is why I bought the knife.
I thought the author's review was a little optimistic for the sake of sales, though.
I appreciate the response.

Don't they make those out of 420J2? Why use such garbage steel?

Damn good question.... I wish CRKT would pull thier head out of thier butt and stop using cheap steel.
I think the majority of people who do like CRKT products would not mind paying a few dollars more for better steel. ( namely me )

I found one for $12 new so I got it just as an odd knife, I really have no use for it and it's not really a carry knife, not sure what it is good for other than to pull it out of its clip/holder look at it and put it back

I agree that 420j2 is garbage, and wish I could kick CRKT in the nuts for using inferior steels on some otherwise GREAT knives!
But the fact that the HAWG is 420j2 is one of the reasons i posted this thread in the first place. I want to know if anyone found good uses for such a small, low carbon, thick edged, single ground knife with a interesting but potentially dangerous sheath design.

For example, one day I was carryng mine for the sake of experimentation, and had it simply clipped onto my belt loop. When I went to sit down on a friends fancy stained wood bench, the sheath flexed away from the blade as I slid to sit down, and the knife tip gouged a seven inch long, very deep gash into the wood. CRAP!
