CRKT: Spear Point or Tanto?

I like CRKT's M21-04 spear point and I like the M16-14 tanto. Both knives weigh about the same and both are fairly well made with AUS 8 blades. Anyone like one over the other and, if so, why?

Thanks!

The spear point looks pretty cool, but then, so does
the tanto.

Get the spearpoint. Can be used for more general cutting chores. I have an m16 EDC spearpoint and I love it.

I like my M16 alot. I have the spear point. It has done some work, been on a few hikes with me. Locks up pretty tight, the TiNi coating is VERY tough, hardly any marks on it. Just be careful if you are going to EDC it; the texturing on the thumbstuds chewed holes in my jeans.

Which one did you get crispy? There are alot of m16 variants. I got the one here: http://crkt.com/m16edc.html and it is a perfect folder. Dont think mine has TiNi coating though. Also mine doesn't have the auto-lawks feature because it is quite and old one. Got the black spear-point.

I used an M16-04 for a couple years as my hard-use camping folder. I lost that one, and bought an M21-04, and I think it's a lot more practical knife. The recurve edge cuts better on a draw, and the point is a lot more useful than the tanto for anything other than scraping. Both are very sturdy blades.

Hey Gryffin...does the M21 come in the EDC size too? Or is it the regular large one?

Keep in-mind that the spear-point is easier to re-sharpen correctly than is the tanto blade.

The M21 comes in only two frame sizes, large (-04/-14) and small (-02/-12).

The M16 comes in large (-04/-14) and small (-02/-12) frames with tanto blades, as well as a mid-size (-03/-13) with spear-point blade, and the very small EDC frame with either spear-point (-01) or tanto (-10) blades.

So, no, the M21 doesn't have an EDC-sized version. At least, not yet!

Well, kinda sorta; the tantos have two very straight edges, which themselves are very easy to sharpen, you just have to sharpen them individually.

Do the Spear Point M21-04. I just got mine yesterday and have cut the hell out of lots of things just to see if I like it. It is only 11/16 longer than the M16-13 (my former EDC) folded, but when you open it...it's 2x the blade. Check ebay I picked mine up for less than 50 including shipping.

Which reminds me...what kind of an edge is generally better for these types of knives? My sharpener (also made by CRKT) allows for two types, as does Spyderco's. One's billed for utility, the other, I think, is for a sharper knife but with an edge that will wear quicker.

The tanto blades sharpen okay if you sharpen them in two stages. Most of the blades with serrations are sharpened primarily on the left side. The M16-13 is an okay knife, but I like the extra beef on the M21-04. It's very sleek.

I've heard lots of good things about the toughness of these knives. It's frustrating to live in a world where there's so many decent knives. I carry knives like most folks wear ties.
