I am in my local super store and i am buying a Leatherman Wave since they are on clearance for $45.

While standing here i see a CRKT Spew for 9 bucks on clearance.

Is the spew worth owning?

What is the steal made of?

What is the design of the knife made for?

Do i really need it?

I really like the Spew when I first saw it. Neat little design! It certainly wouldn't be a bad deal to scoop it up for $9 considering they're still ~$15-$30 on most retail websites. The steel is your average chinesium which is 5Cr15MoV. Honestly it's not the worst and they've always come with a fair heat treat. Expect to touch up the edge with any heavier or outdoor type usage; and I definitely wouldn't pry with it. But it'll get shaving sharp and be a good neck knife!

Worst knife I've ever bought. Super soft steel. Might as well have been made out of soap. Complete garbage.

To summarize, if you get a good one then you have gotten a great deal. If you get a bad one, you aren't out much cash at all. CRKT quality control seems to have an element of hit or miss, though I have been lucky enough to have never gotten a junker. I like small wharncliffes, so I would do it.

Basp is right. The steel is low-end, soft steel that doesn't support the aggressive geometry that Alan Folts designed.

The custom Spew is hard to find, but the steel is CPM 154. It's a lot better. But you'll have to add an extra $100 or so. It's one of my favorite special-use knives. That thin, sharp, super-pointy blade is excellent for detail work. But good steel/heat treat is important to support that geometry.
