CRKT Ultima 2007

The reviews of this knife that I have read have been...diverse. One in "Tactical Knives" lauded the serration design, and said that the handle was amazing. I read a brief review of it "Leatherneck" which stated that it was "good...for nothing" and said that the handles were so rough due to the grip design that one needed work gloves and that the blade shape was pretty much useless in the field. Just something to think about...

For $40.00 it's really not a bad deal IMO.

What's comparable at that price?

Only thing I'd really want to know is if it's made in China or in Taiwan.
I don't buy knives that are made in China.

"What's comparable at that price?"

I've seen it priced on line at one source for $89.99.

I never thought that the handle would be rough...

If you ask in Wilderness& Survival, they'll tell you to save for a Fallkniven F1.
PracTac will recommend a Kerambit.
Wine & Cheese swears by its Robot Cannons, tried and true.
Traditional will tell you all you need is a good old Stockman, everything else is a toy.
Maintenance&Embellishment will ask why you didn't just sand the handle down.
Gimme a Ka-BAR any day of the week and twice on Sunday!

:D
Excellent observations! I love my toys but if anyone wants a real knife for tough, combat-related pursuits I always reccomend a KABAR or SRK. Cheap, tough as nails, sharp, proven, and reliable. What more can you really ask for?

You forgot to mention the Busse and Spyderco forums. :D

$119 is way too steep for that knife , IMO and I like and own many of CRKT's knives.

That would not be the first knife I've seen with a horrid handle either. I gotta agree on the Ka-Bar , tried and true , American classic all the way and easy on the 'ol wallet.

I have been EDCing the Kubun for about 3 months. It seems to hold an edge. Nice and thin, and works as a boot knife as well. Here we go! For the money, its one of Cold Steel better deals.Mine is the 4116 Krupp one. And I like it.

I agree, I'd pick the Ka Bar over the CRKT any day of the week.
(Had forgotten that the Ka Bars were still available in the 40 dollar range.)

Also the Ontario Spec Plus knives are great values

The SRK is not what it was, no longer made in Carbon V since the demise of Camillus. It's available in AUS8 and I think the Ka Bar's 1095 will provide better service. Especially now that it's available coated for corrosion resistance.

The CRK Ultima is an OK knife. The handle's not that bad. The steel is OK. I would say it's not worth the msrp, but $40 is fine. When I had mine, I thought it was pretty nice, but then I got some better knives & the Ultima didn't feel so great anymore, lol.

The CRKT First Strike is thicker. The handle is different, but the steel is more substantial on it.

Hope that helps.
