i decided to test out my CRKT ultima today because i was bored and i diddnt expect much of it but boy was i surprised. first i got the feel of it and tried whittling then moved on to light chopping. the way it was ground is that it comes from pretty thick stock but it looks like the top and bottom is flat ground pretty thin and in the middle it was considerably thicker. so it didn't have enough heft to chop well in my opinion. though, it did well through about 3 inch saplings. then i decided to baton through nice thick pine. and oh man did it succeed! once i got the hang of it the knife did well! then with the saplings i made a pretty terrible primitive bow and arrow the wood wasn't that great in the first place but it was probably me. i stuck the tanto point into a piece of pine and tried prying it out no damage. this one was made in 2007 and in Taiwan. i was suprised because i never thought of CRKT as a name of good quality. (this was one of my early purchases before i really knew much) after this testing the knife was still sharp. things i would change the handles are quite grippy and will not let my hand slip, but it is a bit abrasive without gloves. well this is my review, hope i helped somebody out. this knife i got out of smoky mountain knife works a few years back on sale for i think 60-70 dollars.
the only problem i had is i dropped the knife a few times and a good sized piece of the handle material broke off near the blade, i just used the file on my leatherman to smooth the sharp edges off and now i dont really notice it.

I picked one up a few weeks ago for under $50 shipped. I didn't really need it, but the price was right and the knife always interested me primarily because of the handle design. I pretty much have the same opinions of the knife as you, surprisingly decent knife for the price, scales a little rough on the hands but lots of gripping power. I haven't put it through it's paces yet, but now I'm inspired to beat on some on my next camping or hunting trip. Thanks for the review.
