I see that CRKT is offering a copy of one of my favorite boot knives the Sting. Has anyone purchased one and if so how does it perform with respect to the original one. I used to carry one when I was running around the Middle East in the 80s. I was thinking about getting one prior to going back to the sandbox in the next couple of weeks.

I was a fan of CRKT back when they were adding quality to each new revision of their knives. It now seems that they are quietly changing the steels in their knives to much lower quality steel from the already much critisized AU6. AU6 is relatively soft and wear prone but is very stain resistant and easy to sharpen. Some of the latest production runs of knives which were previously AU6 have now been changed to 420J without any notice. I would now be wary of buying anything from CRKT unless it specifically states the metal type.

CRKT is keeping AUS-8 for many of its knives and the new Crawford-designed assisted openers are 154-CM.

Non of us likes to see the AUS-4 or 420J2, but they also serve a less sophisticated segment of the knife market which is more impressed by low end price than high end steel.

Focus on what they have for us, which still includes creativity and quality.

I believe TOPS makes one similar to the Sting. Not sure of the steel type.
