I recently heard that CRKT put out a cheaper version of the Sebenza. Does anyone have more information on this collaboration, or pictures?

CRKT had a model called the S-2 that has been described as a cheaper alternative to a Sebenza. The S-2 is long discontinued but they do pop up on occasion.
I don't know if this is the CRKT model you heard about but it's the only one I've seen being compared to a Sebenza.

I think it might be the new Ken Onion collaboration.

Ah...you might be right.

EDIT: I'm sure the Ripple is a good knife but I'll hold back any Ripple vs. Sebenza discussion until people actually start getting them in their hands. ;)

There can be only one Sebenza.

Sebenza IS.

There is no substitute.

Kind regards,

Jos

From what I read, it was a while go, so not the new Onion collaboration. My understanding was that CRK was involved.

Never heard of a CRKT / CRK collaboration. Do you have any links to where you are getting your info?

I have seen them over here and they are terrible (at best). They have full FRN handles with a steel insert for the contact area on the FRN locking bar.
The F&F was just shocking, blade play so bad it was like waving a stick in a field. The lock travel was about 110% as well.

They are just a big joke even over here in Taiwan. They are also disliked because of the rather shady story that goes along with them.:thumbdn:

Full FRN handles? I thought they were framelocks. is one of the sides frn?

Both sides are FRN including the lock bar, the lock bar has a steel insert for the contact area.

My friend still has one at his shop so I can take a few pics tomorrow if you really need to see how bad they are :p

that's a disgrace haha. wow. how did this even start? why would CRK even want this in the first place? and why did CRKT screw it up so badly? they could have at least made it a TI framelock

Don't see the point of CRKT Sebenza. Sebenza is all about superior build quality, that's why people love it. CRKT will not be able to match it. So what is left? Design? There is nothing really special there. Materials? Well there are plenty of other S30V titanium framelocks.

The "point" is market share. If you can hook someone with a CRK product, then they are more likely to upgrade in the future. Its probably why CRK bailed on the final manufacture, if its not a quality piece people cannot get hooked. If you want to see that type of thing done right, take a took at Spyderco Byrd and Benchmade Red Class - inexpensive quality pieces that get you hooked on the domestic, higher quality goods.

The S2 was a titanium handled frame lock that was sold about 8 or 10 years ago. It wasn't anything like a Sebenza. In fact it was a commercial failure. The lock was also a failure because it lost its springiness in short order.

The new ripple is a fairly light weight, flipper-equipped assisted opener with a framelock. Not very impressive actually and certainly nothing like a Sebenza. It looks more like an Elishewitz design to me rather than an Onion design. I think it will be a commercial success but nothing like the Sebenza.

There are some Chinese copies of the Sebenza that sell for under $20. You can probably guess how they compare.

One that has a similar design is the CRKT Drifter with the SS handle. Obviously won't compare to a Seb in fit or function, but it is quite good for $17. It's my poor man's sebenza.
