CRKT Wasp Knife

I bought one a couple of years ago on an internet special for about 45 bucks. I generally like the more traditional style of knife but the Wasp kind of caught my eye so I ordered one. (of course the 40% discount also helped sway my decision:D )

I was pleasantly surprised at the great fit and finish of the knife. The titanium frame makes it light to carry and the AUS-118 blade takes and holds an edge quite well. I have no complaints at all about the Wasp and it's been in my edc rotation since I bought it. (with about 12 other knives)

I got one last month and also am very impressed with the workmanship. Nice design and ergos as well. I have the 8011 partially serrated 2.87" blade.
The Ti frame does make this a nice lightweight folder (I have read this is 6al4v alloy).
What really sold me was the laminated G-10 handle scales. (very cool looking) and I got a good deal too.
Honestly, have not put it to hard enough use to sharpen yet. The steel is supposed to perform like ATS-34 or 154CM with better corrosion resistance.
Hope this helps.
Bill.

It is an elegant design. Wouldn't it be nice if CRKT used more of that high-end steel? :)

THEY DO!!!!
But you have to buy the limited edition which dramatically dropped in price to a little over $100. I paid $200 for mine, and I thought I was getting a good deal  (well at the time I was).
Keep your eyes open, if you find one it is SO worth it.
Custom quality, finished in Swizterland.

I owned a wasp for a couple of years. I never could come to grips with the ergos (pun intended ;)) . It's a pretty thing with nice materials but it feels like a hand full of porcupines. Too many sharp corners for my taste. Also, the kraton insert in the thumbstud never felt secure and comfortable to me.

I wrote a review of it a while ago. you can read it here

I've since cut myself a couple of times with wet hands and the insert in the thumb stud. I'm thinking of making some custom scales and maybe reaplcing the rubber insert with a nice bit of something

I like the design and looks of the knife, but the thumbstud is an inexcusably lame position to interfere with deep cuts.

Ruined the whole knife for me.

I just invested for the larger one with a plain edge. The total came to less than $40 which included shipping.

In my brief review above I forgot to mention the thumbstub... I really never cared for the height, shape, or looks of the thumbs so I bought a replacement like the one below from knifekits.com.(see below) It looks and feels much better w/the replacement stud

I concur... nice looking knife, but not the best user. A bit fiddly to open, with that weird thumbstud. Lots and lots of corners and edges.

Still, it's a nice, elegant, stylish knife for when I dress like a grown-up, although I recently picked up a Black Elishewitx E-Lock that's pretty much taken it's place in that role.

Could you tell me what size replacement you used? I was thinking of doing the same for my dad's knife, but I don't have it with me to measure. Thanks!

The Wasp is one of the best undiscovered bargains out there.

Aside from the thumbstud not being right for some hands, what is there not to like about this knife (Howard Viele design, Titanium, fancy G10, some of the best bladesteel ever used by CRKT, AND A $30-40 PRICE ??). If this were a Kershaw or Spyderco, my bet is that it would be commanding $100 +.

My favorite is the large PE (Mod 8002). The knife was originally sold as a special edition with CF scales in place of the G10 and as Walking Man mentioned, it went for better than $200. If you do go for one of these, check the model numbers, the knife comes in 2 sizes. My preference is for the larger one.

I bought one as I like Viele designs. As others have said I found the handle uncomfortable and I have never carried it. I don't know if the limited edition is better but on the pictures the corners looked less sharp. I really prefer the original Spyderco Viele which does however costs a lot more.
