Received a Large Zilla and a Guppie today.
I think i've seen 3 different examples of them and i've yet to be impressed.
I'd have to agree. Awfully big and heavy for what it is.
The pliers are fine, sturdy, and overall strength seems good. Bit retention seems good and the bits seem to stay with the tool.
Agree. Bit retention is almost too good, you almost need a tool to get them out.
The knife blade is where the issues seem to be. The lockup has been poor on all examples i've seen. The blade has had a lot of play and centering issues. I saw one purchased over the weekend earlier today and it had the same poor lockup ( the liner lock didn't fully extend to the tang, only like half on there ). Lockup is better if you really snap out the blade or pull it out hard. Adjusting has brought minimal improvements.
Guess I got lucky. Blade seems fine on mine. No real issues with it. Lockup is not impressive, but fairly solid. Satifactory considering most MTs don't have any lockup.
Overall, the Zilla is not particularly impressive. You get pliers, a combo blade, and just 2 bits (std and phillps) and that's it (plus a pouch)...in a fairly long and heavy package. Think I'd rather have most any Leatherman or Vic.
But, it's also relatively inexpensive. Interesting addition to my MT collection at any rate.
The Guppie is slightly more interesting. Adjustable wrench...which can be handy...decent knife blade....four bits...LED light. No pouch....designed to be carried via a non load bearing caribiner.
Problem I see with the wrench is this thing is pretty short so you're not going to be able put much torgue on it. Could be useful for holding a nut in place while you work bolt with another tool I guess.
Also quite inexpensive, just not sure of its overall usefullness.
