Hey I was thinking about purchasing CRKT's Ichi assisted opener and I wanted to get your opinion on it. Have any of you used it and if so what do you think of it, and what else do you recommend as far as assisted openers? I was thinking about getting Kershaw's Scallion but 2.25" just seems like too small of a blade for me. Also do you think I'd have problems with scratches on the blade if I purchased the black version of this knife?

Thanks

These knives are really new. It'll probably take awhile before you get any solid opinions on them based on use rather than conjecture. As far as assisted openers go, Kershaw is hard to beat. The Leek has a bigger blade and is really well made. There are a few more AO Kershaws but they may be more than you want to spend. SOGs assisted openers have a fan base but I have 2 of them and they both developed alot of blade play after a few weeks that won't go away with tightening the pivot. My Kershaws have zero blade play after years of cycling and use. I'd be interested to try CRKTs AO and I'm also interested in their AutoLAWKS. Why don't you buy one and let us know?

I think I am going to go for it and buy one. Do you think I'll have problems with the black version of the Ichi's blade scratching?

TiNi is tough as hell. I find it works just fine to think of it as not a coating, just the color of the blade. That matte black stuff like BK1, that can't hold a candle to it in either looks or resilience.

And it looks cool too.

Only one downside is that it shows smears and fingerprints REALLY easily.

The black coating on my CRKT M16 is tough as hell. I've been using that knife for almost 3 years and the coating is almost perfect. There's a very small portion of it worn away towards the tip and an almost imperceptible scuff near the tang and that's after constant EDC use including camping and (alot of)fishing. I try not to abuse my knives but I sure as hell use them and often. I've seen other coatings get scuffed and worn away with a few passes through cardboard. Their Titanium Nitrade (TiNi) coating is top notch. No worries there.

Thanks guys, I'm going to order this knife on monday and I'll post up more about it when I recieve it.

ive handled this knife and if you dont like the scallion the ichi will deffinately be too small for you

this thing is actually pretty tiny.

I agree with the post about the Ichi's size. This is a really small knife. Because of this it's pretty sheeple friendly though. Handle it before you buy it, unless it's destination is a drawer or display case. Mine isn't coated but my M16 has survived a couple of years as an EDC with no significant scratches.

I handled it at a local knife store and thought it was big enough for me, but the store I went to didn't have anymore assisted opening versions of the knife. Did any of you handle the assisted version of this knife and if so what did you think about it?

i handled the assisted, and it was kinda small for me. and i got medium to smaller sized hands. the only reason for this is because it dosent have the trigger/flipper like the scallion or chive. since you have to assist it by the thumbstud, your other fingers and the balls of your hand dont have much to purchase.

i would just get a chive if i diddnt have one. pluss the "air-step" texture looks as if it could trap gunk, in which you whould have to painstakingly scrape out.

i will say that i do like the blade shape of the ichi and i could consider gettin the manual version. cuz for the reasons i stated above, i dont feel that i have a good enough grip on the asisted one, when the spring kicks in.
