My old oblong slow/fast cooker has served me well . I am thinking about a crock cooker. Is it possible to cook countrystyle steak to perfection ?

The store boxes have no real info so I'm in the dark.

Uncle Alan an inquiring mind  :D

Well, I only cook steak on a grill. (Yes, I grill all year round.) I have never done it in a crock pot. Sorry!!

Yes, they (crock-pots/slow cookers) will cook a piece of cheap, tough steak to perfection. It is called braising. Flash fry your steak in a skillet to add some colour, add onions, carrots and celery, plus a stock cube and some water or wine a few herbs, and a little flour. Stir well and come back 5 hours later for melt-in=the=mouth steak. .... or cheat and use this recipe. http://www.recipezaar.com/36069

Also great for soups, stews, pork and beans, chilli and curry.

The only things I have found a slow cooker good for are venison stew and bean dip. In a small crock pot , put a large can of refried beans, a medium jar of salsa and a medium jar of jalapeno cheese dip on high until bubbly. Turn the heat on low for a couple of hours to thicken and serve in bowls with Frito Scoops on the side.

swiss steak can be done in a crock pot but country fried steak needs a frying pan.

If cubed steak is pan-fried then it's okay to use the cooker after adding water & onions ?

I like slow & easy cooking. My bride is becoming very supportive in the kitchen. I have done all the cooking for over 30 years.

If you pan fry any steak first, it improves the flavour and also add colour to the sauce during cooking. Fry in small batches covering no more than half the pan, otherwise the juice comes out of the steak and it simmers.

Well done on doing the cooking, men make far better chefs than women. :)

Most any meat that you want to cook in a crock pot (with the exception of the meat in soups) will benefit from browning it first especially a cubed steak. Chicken fried steak is just some cubed steak that has been battered and then fried in a pan with medium heat and about a 1/4 inch of oil in it until brown. After you finish cooking the meat remove the excess oil leaving about a tablespoon of oil. Add about a tablespoon of plain flour to the pan and cook for about a minute then add about a cup to a cup and a half of milk (not half and half or cream) to the pan, scrape the bottom of the pan and cook the gravy until it thickens. Add additional milk if it is necessary to thin the sauce down.

Serve the gravy on top of the Chicken fried steak and you are set. Having said all that, I prefer my chicken fried steak with a plain old brown gravy straight from the jar. I'm a lazy SOB ain't I.

Hi guys, I think the slow cookers are over hyped. It seems harder than it should be to get good info on recipes, and there don't seem to be many one pot recipes. This is a pain, as if you put your vegetables in at the same time as your meat, the veggies will be mush, and probably devoid of vitamins. So I am working on adding veggies fairly late in the piece. Frozen veggies can be added at the very last minute and will heat up easy.

I did tandoori chicken the other day. Place 1 kg chicken flesh into the slow cooker, along with 1/2 cup stock and 1-2 tablespoons tandoori paste. Add a tablespoon or 2 of lemon juice and cook on 2 for 6 hours. I decanted the juice (it was for lunches, not serving straight away) and chilled before skimming the fat. I added frozen vegetables after decanting and stirred in. Add the juice back and freeze in suitable size portions, with some rice. It was really quite nice, although you may need to fiddle with the quantities of lemon juice and tandoori paste. The chicken simply fell apart. I meant to add some natural yoghurt before reheating, but keep forgetting. It is quite nice though.

Cheers, and happy cooking everyone.

Does anyone out there cook a tandoori chicken in a tandoor ??? Does anyone know what a tandoor is ???

I think it's a clay oven.

---

Yes, it is: A tandoor is a cylindrical clay oven used in Punjab region, northern India and Pakistan in which food is cooked over a hot charcoal fire.

I do (being a chef and a foodie). I have instructions for making an outdoor one somewhere. Modern restaurants tend to use gas fired tandoors rather than charcoal. you can make a simple one out of an old, but clean, clay chimney pot.
