Crock Stick Sharpening Tips?

Right now I'm using an old ceramic crock stick sharpener and getting decent edges from it but the tip is not as sharp as the rest of blade. Does anyone have any ideas of what I'm doing wrong. Also I plan on upgrading to a lansky turn box and then to a sharpmaker is this a good idea or should I go straight to the sharpmaker since the stones are different.

its just a matter of concentrating on keeping the angle ... just like using a flat whetstone you have to adjust as you come to the curve and the tip ...

it works well to use the sharpie method and color the sharpened edge of your knife to make sure you are hitting the apex correctly ... and then when you find the motion where you are removing all the sharpie it should give you better results ...

also just a reminder ... don't pull the knife tip all the way through and allow it to slip off the round crock stick or you can round your tip.

hope that helps ... JJ

For me it just seems natural to use a heel-to-tip stroke as I go down the rod, but I find that I get better control over the angle if I go the other way, tip-to-heel. That also prevents slipping the tip off the rod which, as JJ_Colt45 JJ_Colt45 mentioned, can cause rounding. Also, I don't think there's anything wrong with making some short strokes that just concentrate on the tip.

It is hard to get a sharp tip using a crock stick because the tip wraps over the stick at the end of the stroke. To get a sharp tip, you would be better off using a flat stone and finishing your stroke with the tip still touching the flat surface.

I prefer round crock sticks by far over the Sharpmaker ... I know most love it ... but for me the Idahone or AG Russells crock stick set ups are great for fast touch ups ...

and Idahone make a couple different grit Ceramic Hones ... I use and love their 1200 grit Hone ... simple to use easy to take along on most trips.

Yes, the A.G.Russel croc stick set is well made and works great. As far as standard crock stick sets go, "round rods", I think the Idahone and A.G.Russel sets are the 2 best. Of the 2, I prefer the Idahone.
Lansky makes a turnbox version with a set of diamond rods, and a set of ceramic rods. I would like to try this set out some day.
Do not buy one of the no name import crock stick sets. They SUCK badly!

Thanks guys I've practiced a little more and while the edges still aren't where I want them to be I can shave arm hair with the tip now. I'll check out the Idahone and AG Russel sets.

Make & keep them as clean as you can get them before any sharpening.
What works well for that are a new kitchen scouring pad and some liquid abrasive or a Lansky Eraser.
