EKI has offered three "Satin" finishes.
One is a true (Uncoated) Satin finish that was offered in early pieces in 1998. These are very much in demand and usually demand a premium.
There was a short run 1000 pieces done in Chromium Nitrate. These were sold in two piece sets, one 50/50 serrated Commander and one 50/50 serrated CQC7B. Both pieces in the sets were serialized the same and the serial number had a "CN" prefix. (eg "CN001" to "CN500")
Most common is the Hard Chromed "Satin" finish that is currently being used. As with the CN finish, the HC "Satin" finish has a frosted or bead blasted look to it.
Black-T is a Teflon coating added to the exterior of the blade.
I'd say the HC and CN coatings are the toughest by far. Their pretty "low/no maintenance" finishes. The only thing I've witnessed with them is the occasional surface stain/oxidation on the sharpened edge itself. A couple of swipes with a Scotchbrite pad and their good as new.
Uncoated blades require a wipe down on a regular basis to keep the blades from oxidizing, but they are better looking in my opinion.
Black-T, while it looks great and helps to make the blade more "High Speed" is a bit more fragile then the coated "Satin" finishes. It will show scratches fairly easily on a working knife. Edge maintenance is the same as a "Satin" blade if you get edge oxidation/stains.
As an example of the difference, here is a picture of an uncoated Satin Custom CQC7 with a production Hard Chromed "Satin" CQC7B.
