I want to do a bit more carving, and was reading about making spoons and bowls and read about crooked knives.

Does anyone here use one? do you carry it whenever you camp? where's a good place to get one? I must say, I don't think i've ever run across one in all my time in knife shops.

You probably mean one of these. You can find them by running a search for "bent knives" and under carving knives.

This is a specialty knife and typically not carried into camps. In the field, most people will carve spoons, cups and bowls with just their bushcraft knife and save the bent knives for home/hobby/shop time.

Definitely pay a visit to Del Stubbs website; he makes awesome carving knives! His round handles are VERY comfortable. His blades are top notch. Besides, he's a heck of a nice guy, and a pleasure to deal with

Here's mine:

thanks defaultuser. those are nice. I'm keen to try that. seems like good therapy. I'll check out that website.

is there anything to look for specifically? there's alot of shapes out there. which one to start with? what makes a good one vs. a bad one?

how do you sharpen that thing ?

I told you: look on Del Stubbs' website! There's everything you need to know :D

Del explains how to strop his hook knife here. It works, especially if you strop often, like after/before each spoon.
