Hi

I was about to buy a Byrd Crossbill but saw a special on a VG-10 Harpy.

Is the harpy really a huge step over the crossbill? Would you jump on the occasion?

Your toughts.

I would get the Harpy because I prefer the steel on it and it is much lighter than the Crossbill.

I have both, the fit and finish on the Harpy is superior, when i took the Crossbill out of the box, it had a small bit of metal flashing on the tip, it was easily removed by sharpening stones, if you squeeze the blade when it's closed the tip contacts the bottom of the handle, damaging the tip (Sal said this would be addressed on the next run of Crossbills though), so don't squeeze the blade

the Crossbill is available in plain edge (what i have) and combo edge, the Byrd steel sharpens up well, and holds an edge for a decent amount of time, it's just below VG-10 in terms of edge retention and ease of sharpening

the Crossbill is larger than the Harpy, and the blade has a more relaxed curve

the Harpy is SpyderEdge only, has superior VG-10 steel, and a tighter curve of the blade, it has a drying vent in the handle, and also has a bladestop on the tang that prevents the tip from touching the handle

the Harpy is smaller, lighter and has a tighter curve to the blade than the Crossbill

if you want a large (Endura sized) hawkbill, the Crossbill is a decent knife, if you want a more pocketable hawkbill, go for the Harpy, both are excellent knives

Easy choice. The VG-10 Harpy. That's not even a close one. There is no comparison. A Spyder will always beat out a byrd. No exceptions :)

Actually, I'm not a big spydie fan myself. Sorry.

I just like that hawkbill blade. But thanks for your comments guys. I'll get a Harpy.

Hi cybrok. I reside in Newfoundland & was wondering if they had more than one G10 harpy from your source? I've been looking for one in Canada.
If so would you mind sharing your info?
Is it ok to e-mail you for the address/phone#?
