Crosscut saw question

I've seen a few good threads concerning crosscuts here so I figured it would be a good resource for some advice.

I just picked up a new (not sharpened) 32" saw with a regular tooth pattern.

My question concerns filing. I understand how to file the saw and the proper tools for the job I'm just not sure at what angle I should file. I will be cutting mostly hardwoods.

Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

When you say 'regular tooth' pattern do you mean plain tooth?

Thanks for the reply! The starter teeth are plain and the main teeth are the great American pattern.

Look here, it gives you a place to start and how to measure the angle.

the angle on the right-hand face is 48 degrees

file.php

on the left-hand face is 38 degrees

Square_Peg's graphics show the filing angles, but also mention "less set" on that particular saw. Less set doesn't mean no set though, so you will want to set the teeth enough to keep the saw from binding.
