G'day mates, not from the Land Down Under but from the Deep South which to many is a whole other Country. I suppose a true Southern Hospitality greeting is in order....How Y'all Durrin ?

Not a Blade guy but involved with a crossover hobby that involves polishing metal. Pinewood Derby Racing guys like me polish their .092, 3 or 4 diameter stainless axles as a speed trick. Not sure of the exact stainless but has the dull look of a 409 SS. Some guys sand AND polish removing too much metal causing slop in the axle/wheel bore area and lose speed.

For me it's polish polish polish only using Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish, supposedly a .05 micron (question mark). During a long ago Smokey Mountain Knife Works visit I observed guys sharpening knives you can shave with or use as a mirror while you're shaving. They were polishing with what appeared to be a "cottony" looking wheel and some sort and a paddle wheel supposedly a paper product ???

You blade guys obiviously know something about polishing metal that us Pine Heads don't. Can anyone shed some light on this mystery please ?

Thanks Y'all !!

At Smoky Mountain Knife Works they use Paper Wheels for sharpening knives for customers.
I was there a few years ago, and besides looking at all the old knife displays i also watched an employee sharpen some knives on the Wheels.
The objective there is to be “fast and good enough”, which is understandable from their point of view.
I have been using Paper Wheels since 2009.

Thanks K......Yeah those cats got it down. Found what I needed here and now my axles have gone to the next level. Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish I think .05 micron then finish off with the 200,000 grit .01 micron diamond paste. The cool part pre polish axle diameter .093 post polish .093. No material removed just a polished mirror finish. EXACTLY what I was looking for. Blade guys rule the metal polish world. Thanks
