As some of you know, the wife and I took a little trip this summer to look for some Schrades.
Dale kept telling me about all the new-old stock Schrades that he was finding in stores in his area,so when the wife said that she'd like to visit Oregon and Washington,I didn't object.
Along the way we stopped in Nebraska to visit some friends.I was really surprised that when my wife made a remark about me looking for Schrades,Max's eyes lit up and he had a smug look on his face.
Now,Max and I have been friends for about 6 years, but we've never talked about knives.
Well,it turned out that he has big collection of Schrades and it's useless to hunt Schrades in western Nebraska, eastern Wyoming, and southwestern South Dakota.
If you wonder where his handle came from, this is Crow Butte.

If you look on the left side in this picture,Crow Butte is to the right and the ranch where Max was born (and now owns) is slightly left-of-center.

This Pine Ridge section of Nebraska is beautiful country and there is a lot of early western history associated it.
Supposedly,Crow Butte got it's name when a party of Crow Indians were forced to take refuge on top of it by an overwelming number of Sioux, back in the 1800's.
Maybe our Crow Butte will break down and show us some of his Schrade collection and tell us what happened to those Crow Indians.:D

Hey Guys,
The story about the Crow Indians ended well for them, as they managed to let themselves down of of the butte at night and made a getaway. The Sioux that had trapped them on top of the butte was the same group that Crazy Horse was born into. Ron, you should have gone into the True Value store in Crawford, as I seen last week that they still had a Schrade display with about 5 or 6 Old Timer knives left. Going there tomorrow and see what they have.:p As I've said before, my collections go all over the place. I have tried concentrating on one line or style, but I always end up the same. You have to do what makes you happy.:p I would have to find a tool venue to show my tool prizes. Probably not many toolaholics here. REally liked that Candy Striped fixed blade that Reloder found. Lots of money though.:thumbdn:

A side note on Reloder's and Crow Butte's first meeting. Ron was always outbidding me on ebay on just about everything that I was interested in, so I sent him an email asking what the deal was. Turned into a great friendship that I treasure. Who said meeting people on the internet is bad.:D

Boy do I feel ridiculous!:o The NOS Schrades turned out to be Taylor,LLC knives.:barf: Oh well, on to the next find.

hi, crow butte, nice looking pics of your part of the country, someday hope to get out there for a couple of days, meanwhile if you give me a place to send it ill send you a new 104ot in its clampack, got quite a few and can spare one.theres no catch, i just always loved that part of the country, and the knife will be put to good use.I also read a treasure hunting magazine and their always exploring the ghost towns out there, any ghost towns out that area, just wondering.thanks

Thanks for the kind offer TTH. There are quite a few towns that are deserted alright. Most of them now reside on private ground, though. Don't know how hard it would be to get permission. Lots of history around here. Some of which I'm still finding out, even though I've lived here 50 some years. We have an old moonshiners cave on our property that I have always wanted more info on. Not many people left that are from that era, but I was talking to a friends grandmother last week and found out she had been in the cave shortly after the local Law had rounded him up and put him in jail. You never know where good info will come from. You can check our website for info on contacting me. www.crowbutteoutfitters.com . You are very generous as are the vast majority of the people on this forum.

Good call on the Taylor Schrades, Crow Butte. I hope that in at least a small way, we here played a part in your being able to tell the difference between the Imperial Schrades and the new imported ones, or at least knowing there was such a thing.

Codger,
Thanks for the vote of confidence. By the way I enjoy your comments on the survival side of this forum. Nice to have a voice of reason to balance things out.

Hahaha! I like playing there! There is such a wide array of types. They tend to get carried away at times over some relatively insignificant things, and there are a surprising number of "Billy-Bad-Azz-Wannabees" too. Amazing how many people are Recon Rangers, Seals, Ninjas, SAS, etc., and feel free to boast and threaten people half a world away. And some are just really young guys getting caught up in fantasy. That's cool too. I like to think I inject some calming, reasoning influence there. 99% are great guys and have great ideas and legitimate questions, but not enough experience to find their answers. Please join in there. FIfty years near the Butte has bound to have taught you a thing or two. Ever tried to outrun a sweeping grassfire?

Max,
I was in that store in Crawford and wondered if I'd missed some real Schrades,as I saw the Taylor-mades. :jerkit:
I was also in that antique store and when I asked him about Schrade knives,he said that a fellow  comes in about once a month looking for them.
Now,if you go about 1000 miles west to Salem,OR;Dale will show where there are still a few.
Ron
BTW - You're not the only one who treasures our friendship! :D :)

Codger,
I was always told to run through the fire line and try to get to the already burnt area. I always thought it would take a leap to faith to do it, but I do know you can't outrun a fire like that. It does make you wonder about the people who are posting on forums like that. I will try to post a photo of a set of Ducks Unlimited knives that my wife gave to me. Wish me luck!!! I should have known that Ron would have beat me to them if there were any knives to be had.

Well, there's not too many thriving businesses in Crawford these days:grumpy: ,so it would be hard to miss a Schrade.
Carol wanted to have lunch at the cowboy grill that you took us to,a few years ago,but there was a padlock on the door.:(
I like to poke around in these small towns in the midwest. It's surprising what you can find sometimes. :D We used to have some old hardware stores around here but Walmart and Lowes have driven them out.

In a great reversal of that trend, my town now has a large new locally owned (franchised) Ace Hardware store! I forgot what customer service was like. I went in, before they had all their stock in, and ordered some brass pin stock of various size. Three days later I was in for something else & my pin stock was there! That was so fast it was scary! I am now hooked. Good customer service is addictive. Having had to shop at Wally World, Lowes, Home Depot & Costco for so long, I thought customer service was a thing that existed only in my mind............kinda of an old man's fantasy.

Now if they could just come up with some old US made Schrades........:D :D :D

Dale

Is there room in town for two Schrade collectors???

Just received the knife today, tthman. Very much appreciated. I will send the info you asked about. Again, many thanks.
