Anyone have this cutting competition knife or know much about it? I really want a good chopper, so its either this or a golok from Valiant Co. Any advice? thanks. Is this Browning knife as good as it seems for such a great price?

I have heard nothing but good things. No personal experience.

Let's move this one on over to "General" for further discussion...

This is a great knife and a huge value for the price, but I'm not sure I see it taking the place of a golok. Two different animals. Which is better for you will depend on what you're chopping and what you're willing to carry, but you don't need to have any reservations based on the quality of the Crowell/Barker.

I have one and I do think it is one of the best choppers out there, especially for the price. It is a solid knife. Full tapered tang which helps move the weight forward more. How many knives at this pricepoint have a tapered tang? Great convex edge. Nice micarta handle slabs, a well made sheath/frog system giving both belt and concealed carry options.
I have used it chopping and compared it to my BRKT Golok and the Golok is a tiny bit better a chopper in my hands, likely because of the heavier tip design. The Browning tends to be faster though which makes it wonderfully lively for a large knife. For the small money it is definately worth owning one and using it hard. I am still amazed at how much knife you get for around 100. dollars in this knife.

I very much agree.

Remember, the Crowell/Barker was made for cutting competitions, while the golok (any golok, really) is made for real world chopping.

They're both fine knives; I've handled each. It's all about what you're going to do with them.

For more on goloks and similar choppers, seek out recent threads by Horn Dog. He's done some wonderful reviews ... if I recall, in Wilderness.
