I was wandering the junk mall, looking for old Forgecraft kitchen knives, when I came upon an interesting old stag handled (bread?) knife. It's an odd shape, but I don't know if that's original, or has just been oddly sharpened.

The stamp says: "Crown Cutlery Co." and underneath is what may have once said "England" What my old eyes just can't make out is what's written in the middle around some sort of star or sun symbol.

I searched and found references to a Crown Cutlery importer based in NY, but also a Crown Cutlery Sheffield England. Perhaps one of our resident Sheffieldian experts can tell more about this oddity.

r8shell r8shell I know this isn't any actual information, but perhaps it can get you a little closer. These are two images I found by searching "Crown Cutlery Co Sheffield England" on Google image search. The first is obviously a very poor quality image, but I think the stamp looks similar to yours and could be the same. Is there any hint of the beginning of the word "SHEFFIELD" under the C in CROWN?

Here's the second image I found (through the same Google image search). It looks like this could be similar to the circle on the inside of the stamp on your knife, and I believe the text inside the circle on your knife may say "CELEBRATE" like this stamp.

About half that blade has been sharpened away. They were normally sold with a matching carving fork and sharpening steel. Google carving knife sets. I have one that is full around here some where. A big belly to a clip point. I've rescued some nice old stag off some of those worn out sets a couple of times .--KV

Thank you, Barrett. The stamping is very worn; I wiped it down with oil and held it to the light, and I think I do see the letters "SH", so Sheffield England would fit. Also, that could definitely say "celebrate". This gives me somewhere to start Googling.

Thanks for the info, that makes sense that it was that type of carving knife. I bought it thinking I could either use it as is, or salvage the handle. There are some cracks, but it really fills my hand perfectly. It even crossed my mind to cut about two thirds of the blade off to make a Nussmuk-like profile. That's assuming this isn't a rare and valuable antique, of course. :D

I thought, when zoomed in, that maybe I was able to see a very faint S, H and the corner of an E, circled here, in the photo from your first post…

…but I wasn't sure if I just wanted to see that because I thought it might be there. :D

I'd say it's certainty not not there. :p
