Well,
I found out today that Crucible Steel is only a 40 minute drive from my house. Un-freaking-believable... the warehouse in Arlington is the distribution point for all the knife steel they carry in the U.S. and wow do they have a selection. I talked to Bruce, I didn't get his title but he is "the man", and he gave me a short tour of the shop. He showed me pallets of stuff that they are going to ship to Benchmade and noted that the largest company they ship to is Spyderco.

I was also astounded with the machinary they have in their warehouse. None of their machines would have fit in my garage... they are huge surface grinders, saws, mills and god knows what I missed by oogling the steel.
Pallets and pallets of CMP 134, S30V, S90V... and other stuff I don't remember the correct designation for.

The best part was that I went in with the intention of buying some "exotic" steel. I normally do my thing in ATS 34 or 440C and I really want to make something more exotic (for me) on a trip I am planning to see one of my knife making buddies in Virginia.

I have been thinking about atttempting one of Dan Koster's designs that he came up while researching his "Hunted" knife, but I am still making up my mind. Realize it typically takes me 6 months to a year to complete a blade and by that time the design has significantly changed (read: big knives turn into little knives). Too bad I have a day job and that keeps me busy.

The great news, is I got myself a 1/4"x10"x14" (almost rectangular) piece of S30V for a bunch less than if I'd ordered it. It was lying up against a mill next to a pile of 1x8" stuff and it called out to me for one of the above projects.

The Tuesday after next when I fly into Newport News I am going to be one happy dude. I will have steel on the ground and ready to grind. Now all I have to go do is put together a big reinforced box and put all my supplies in it to UPS tomorrow.

Dang...I am feelin the sting of jealousy pain...Bad!! ouch!

I would love to be able to "browse" their scraps. I've asked for scraps many times...but it's too much hassle for them (understably)...sure wish I could just scavenge what I want.

As you've noted, they are very generous to the knifemaking crowd. Many other steel foundries blow us off...since none of us can afford to buy steel by the roll. :(

Next time you go by, if you don't mind, let me know. I have a few things I'd like to try out in 3V...but don't want to buy a larger quantity.

If you need one of the designs I posted, let me know too - I'll gladly mail you a 1:1 printout of the CAD drawing. You're welcome to do whatever you want with it.

One more thing...don't try to polish the S30V....

If you call the guys in Arlington,

http://www.crucibleservice.com/contact/regionUS.cfm

They have a $75 minimum order.

I don't think they let anything go to waste. What the "scraps" that they have they turn around and cut into barstock for little guys like us. That was one thing that Bruce ("the man") was telling me. Sure he ships to Big manufacturers, but he also realized that there is serious business to be made from the hundreds of home grown knife makers out there.

They are currently in the process of making more barstock for us little guys. However the majority of what they have is in big honking sheets (yes, a technical term) and has to be cut to size, so expect a 4-5 day wait before they ship.

I am still jazzed up about my visit to Crucible and I've my trip to Virginia the week after next. This is better than Christmas!

Edited to add: Now I gotta go take a look at your designs again.

"I think" this is where they actually produce the stuff that you will find at that warehouse:

Crucible Materials Corporation
575 State Fair Blvd
Syracuse, NY 13201

At least I think it is.

:)

That stuff is awesome. I have several CR knives in S30V, and I believe a Lone Wolf Tactical I have also uses it. Really tough stuff. Can be challenging to sharpen though.

I envy you the location. For 8 years though I had a similar deal. Lived 1 mile away from Beeman HQ and spent a lot of time at their store, and also lived 5 minutes away from Calico hardwoods. They had an incredible selection of exotic hardwoods and would let me browse their trim pile. Wish I had grabbed 10 times more while I could, but did get some nice peices.
