Hi,

I'm going on a cruise shortly, Royal Caribb. lines. I have looked up their knife regulations as well as some other cruise lines. I am wondering if anyone has been on a cruise lately and if they had any problems with knife possession.

R/C states "dive knives" will be stored by security and given back when in port. Other cruise lines mention less than 4" blade is acceptable.

I plan on only taking a Spyderco salt, a SAK escort, and maybe another back up like a Buck 444.

are there any metal detectors boarding in port? Any information is appreciated. Thanks.

IIRC -- They do use metal detectors or x-rays...so they can see if you're bringing on booze instead of buying their hyper-priced cocktails.

I'm sure the SAK will suffice and won't draw any attention. If they ask, claim its for the bottle opener.

Been a few years, but when I took a Royal Caribbean cruise, I packed both an SAK and a Spyderco Delica in my bag. No problems.

I went on a cruise last year (Carnival Cruises, the fun ships! :P), and they did the whole metal detector/xray machine bit. They did this every single time we would embark/disembark. I didn't carry a knife with me at the time, so I didn't really look up how stringent their carry policy is. I would imagine you could get them on with checked luggage, but not sure about during your excursions.

For utility use or defense? The SAK would be great for utility. Cold Steel makes the "Nightshade" series of knives that are non-metallic. Great for self-defense.

Just went on RC a month ago- Packed my Mini-Grip and a small Opinel. Security wouldn't release the bag until I came down to claim it. Then they made me get the knives out and impounded them (said they were "weapons"). Then I had to go to security at the dock to pick them up. Ridiculous hassle for two small folders.

I did manage to carry my SAK Ambassador through the checks getting on the ship, though.

I carried a multi-tool and Delica in my camera bag a few years ago and got away with it. I think they are worse now. We are planning an Alaskan cruise and I plan to fish and always carry a folder on my vest. I am betting that will be a problem.

Cruised on RC two weeks ago. Took on small lock back and one sodbuster with me. No problems what so ever.

I'm cruising (my first) the week of Thanksgiving. So it sounds like a couple of small folders would be okay, but leave the small fixed blades at home, right?
