I got a Stainless Police a couple months ago and it seems to have a real hard time holding an edge. I've sharpened it several times and it dulls in a heartbeat. At first I thought it was my sharpening ,leaving a wire edge or something, but I'm not so sure any more. A week or two after I started carrying it I noticed a small chip on the edge, which I sharpened out, and now I notice another. Seems to indicate to a brittle blade doesn't it? Would that account for quick dulling? Of course it's possible that the blade is too soft and I'm not chipping the edge but denting it. Though I can't seem to remember cutting anything harder than cardboard. My old Endura just kept on going but this Police is crapping out on me. Anyone else experienced this?

I'm going to try sharpening it once more to make sure that I'm not the problem. If the symptoms continue, what should I do?

If the symptoms continue, send it in to Spyderco. They can test the blade to see if a bad heat treat was applied. If the knife is defective, they'll replace it for you.

Hey, at worst, they'll say nothing is wrong with it and put a new edge on it for you. Then you can see if it was really your sharpening or not.

Disco Stu, I agree with what TOTC said. I assume you have a plain edged Police but could you tell us what blade material is used on your knife? As far as I know, there were a number of different steels used with the Police: GIN-1, ATS-55, and VG-10 (others?). I don't have my Police on me now but I think it's the ATS-55 version and haven't had any problems with it.

Stu,

That doesn't sound like normal performance for that knife to me. I have an ATS-55 plain edge s/s Police and it holds a great, very sharp edge for a long time. I think the blade steel on yours must be of sub-standard manufacture in some way. Probably if you send it in to the warranty and repair dept. at Spyderco, they'll end up replacing it for you with a new one assuming they can identify a problem.

Good luck, Jeff/1911.

Usually 'brittle' indicates hardness. If your knife's chipping problem is caused by brittleness and, consequently, hardness, then the undamaged portion of edge should not be getting dulled quickly.

Hi Disco Stu. If the problem persists, I think you should contact Mike aty Warrantee & Repair and make arrangements for us to check the blade. Though we always try our best, Pobody's Nerfect.

:) Thanks Sal. This is why I'll always buy Spyderco. A poor blade might show up once in a great while but the service just can't be beat.
