I have medium hands. I prefer tip up due to every other knife I carry is tip up, it is safer imo, it leaves more pocket space, and I am not being scratched by the jimping of the thumb ramp anymore. As far as deployment, first off I am not trying to set any records so it is not a priority. With tip down, the thumb hole was easier to get to, but I had to flip the knife over in my palm to get it into position. With tip down the knife is orientated properly, but I do have to slide it down a bit to get to the thumb hole. It's a wash for me, and all other points are positive for tip up for me. The notion that tip down is the one and only way to carry this knife is nonsense to me. The more likley reason behind it is at the time four-way clips were not the thing and most knives came with one clip position. The decision for tip down was made for two primary reasons, one being the ease of getting it out and deploying such a big knife as decided on by Spyderco, and the other is the Military does not have full liners so there is nothing for the clip to anchor in. Since the Military has not been re-designed (no Military 2 yet, and remember the original Para has tip down only), it has not received a four-way setup. I would bet big money the Military 2 will have a four-way option. I will say I would rather have the Original Military with my mod than a fully lined Military 2 weighing more so it can have tip up. If Spyderco uses inserts like I did that would be perfect. The inserts have been used in production knives (Kershaw Echelon comes to mind)and I have not heard one complaint from them.
