Cruwear PM2 in coastal Florida as EDC?

I'm not a fisherman, actually I don't fish at all, however I do live in coastal South Florida. I've got my eyes on a sprint run with the PM2 in CPM Cruwear...

I've read some varying accounts about the steel and was wondering what you think of the Cruwear from Spyderco vs say the standard Pm2 offering in S45VN?

It's a wither or situation as I can't afford both. I just want one good daily carry knife right now. I was attracted to the Cruwear due to it's toughness but the corrosion resistance has me hesitating.

Thanks and I apologize for the newbie question.

IMO the Cruwear is better, but it probably will change colors on you in the salty air. I think it’s a cool look, but that’s personal preference. S45VN is amazing too though…

I live a couple miles from the beach in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. I have carried a non stainless every day since moving here, 6 years ago, without issue. Most of those knives have a patina and no coating. For storage I wipe with oil, Vaseline, or even chapstick. My carry knife has been waxed with plain ol’ turtle wax that you use on your vehicle. No issues at all.

I live a few miles from the beach in South Florida and have never had an issue with corrosion or unwanted patina on REX45, D2, M4, etc.

If you won't use it to cut food, you can put a dry lube like TuffCloth Marine on it and never worry.

It's not as prone to corrosion as one might think (neither is 3v, btw). But regular exposure to salty conditions will increase increase the likelihood of some spotting/pitting.

I’m about 20 minutes from the gulf here in Louisiana where the humidity is high most of the year. If you take care of carbo steel, it will hold up without any major issues. Most of the time, I’m using gloves for work, so I don’t know if my body chemistry plays a part when it comes to staining/rust on a blade. IMO, the safest bet would be go with the stainless first, and then when it’s affordable get one in Cruwear

The price they're charging, 158 or something, is a steel. CRUWEAR knives typically command a bit of a (artifical in my opinion) premium over other steels...just ask benchmade.

I have a few CRUWEAR knives and they don't rust that easy. Its not nearly as bad as M4, and I find it to be better than D2 as well. Holds an edge and tougher than S45VN. But if given the choice for FL, you should go S45VN as it's quite a bit more rust resistant.

Good luck!

Whittling wood and such, maybe even doing tougher tasks while camping what would you get S45VN or Cruwear for that scenario?

CRUWEAR, but S45VN wouldn't die.

Anything you can logically do with a folding knife, S45VN is more than enough. CRUWEAR On a folding knive to be honest, is more toughness than it needs.

You can't go wrong with either

Cruwear will be fine as long as no salt water gets to it. Even getting a small amount of fresh water on cruwear won't really harm it all that much because it's relatively stainless (D2 levels of stainlessness). S45VN is a nice steel, but Spyderco runs their cruwear harder, and it's a dream to sharpen. I've also noticed that it's extremely resilient to micro chips and rolls so the toughness factor definitely helps it.

I live in coastal Florida and often work within a quarter mile of the water. My folders get wet from sweat (I carry inside my waist band.). I also think that working in high humidity close to the salt water causes even my stainless blades to develop some corrosion. I have to rinse off my knives at night and dry thoroughly. Sometimes apply a bit of CLP oil. Scrub off corrosion early on.

I d start with the the s45v blade.

Small amount of freshwater the Cruwear must be able to put up with... I do tons of camping and my knives get WET. I work as a park ranger so I'm always outside. Not by saltwater but out in the elements. Does the Cruwear fit the bill?

I live in the Treasure Coast area of FL and carry my Spyderco Salt when I’m near the water. However I’m not afraid to carry my BM mini Adamas in CruWear or my PM2 in S45VN everywhere else.View attachment 1802219View attachment 1802220

Another Floridian (CFL) here. I can confirm that I've had zero issues carrying my Cruwear knives. Heh, I tend to carry slipjoints in 1095 quite often as well, and again, no issues.
