So Ive got the Manix 2 Cruwear in my shopping cart, I'm ready to pull the trigger, but I had a question about the steel. It's not a stainless so I was wondering about patina and rust. Does cruwear patina that easily? I heard it spot rusts more than anything, but that could be wrong. I was trying to hear from someone who has had experience with the stuff. I tried searching through some older threads but didn't really get anywhere.

Some of my credentials: I live in AZ and for 10 months out of the year, we have 0% humidity levels. I have a kitchen set of knives, so I wont be doing any food prep with this. I work in a warehouse where I do a lot of box opening and box break down, nothing really crazy.

I don't have extensive experience with Cruwear I only have the PM2, but the first job I did with mine was slice up a couple of dozen lemons and limes and there was zero patina that formed. In contrast Superblue stained when I cut into an apple the first slice. I live on the Pacific coast so I say press the button you're good to go!

My Cruwear Manix has been exceptional. I like the steel so much I jumped on a para 2 as soon as they came out! Through a lot of use, purposefully cutting fruit to see if it would patina, it looked new. I lent the Manix to a friend for 2 months, told him to treat it like his other knives,(zero maintenance, barely even wiped it off) when I got it back it did have 2 tiny rust spots near the pivot. Cleaned up super easy no have not returned. I have used it quite a bit and it now has a slight very even patina over the whole blade, however you can't tell. Really, I can only tell because I know what it looked like new. I live in Winnipeg, Canada. +40c to -40c and humidity from zero to 100%. I've used it in the rain and snow. I consider it stainless from my experience with it and it is my favorite stainless steel. It sharpens super easy and holds a great edge. I've not had it chip either. Oh and worked warehouse for 19 yrs, out of many knives it was probably my favorite knife in that environment. It was a refrigerated food warehouse. Cut boxes, heavy plastic strapping, other plastic, tape, rope, rubber, styrofoam...great knife with or without gloves. I sincerely doubt you will regret buying a Cruwear Manix.

Cruwear is much more resistant to any patina or rust than say M4. My Gayle Bradley M4 developed a patina very quick, whereas my Manix and PM2 in Cruwear have not. If you are worried just wipe it down at the end of the day or after you use it on something acidic.

it will patina. i found out on a military verison by accident trying to prevent corrosion in storage with a product that failed badly.....and i dislike patinas forced. naturally from age and cutting various things that i nedd to cut im fine with a patina. forced ones typically look bad to me. i know others like them forced but i dont. too each their own.

I'm the same way. A forced patina looks a bit unnatural, and I don't much care for that. A nice natural patina that covers the blade evenly is ok with me however. That looks like it belongs. And thats what I was just wondering if behaved like an m4 or more like a stainless. I will be attempting to prevent the patina from happening for as long as possible. I like my shiny satin finishes.

On a side note, I bought it! Carbon and cruwear headed my way. Thanks everyone for the guidance. Expect pictures in the Spyderco pic thread when it gets here.

I had much the same skepticism with the cruwear, but went for it anyways. My Manix has spent a handful of trail work days in my front pocket here in the PNW (it's humid), has been coated in tree sap and sweat and peanut butter sandwich goo for hours at a time, and still looks like it did new!

The carbon scales are still too nice looking for me, but that's another story!

I'm in SoCal.
Mine has not devolped any patina from food prep.
But it does get minor rust spotting that I suspect is caused by me.
Body perspiration.

Nothing like M4.

My Manix wouldn't take a patina but has a ton of little rust specks. It's not that bad really and as a user I really don't mind it. With living in such a dry area I doubt you will have much issue. I live in Texas so our humidity can get pretty high and it hasn't been a huge issue for me

I'm in MA and I've had my Manix2 Cruwear for a month with much use outside by the ocean and thus far no sign of rust or discoloration.

Question : if one were to store a rusty knife near non-rusty knives , would the rust "spread" to the non-rusty knives ? Does rust work like that ?

No rust does not work like that. It's not contagious.

I've had mine for over a month and carry it most nights and weekends. No noticeable patina or rust. I love this knife.
