Hello,
Thinking about giving CPM CruWear a try and was wondering if it likes to warp in heat treat?
I will be doing 100% of the grinding pre-heat treat so I want at little warp as possible. I've tried doing this with CPM 3V and it worked great, so I guess how does it compare to 3V?

The details matter… how long of a blade? How thick of a spine?

I wouldn’t say it likes to warp, but you should expect some and straightening is part of the process.

For example, when I do kitchen knives in Cru wear, with a hidden tang , guaranteed theres going to be some bending at the heel tang junction

A carbide hammer works great for straightening.

I don’t know how it compares to 3V

in my limited experience, quenching in LN2 is a significant factor wrt warping in general. Personally, I don't think Cruwear NEEDS cryo, and have had good results throwing it in the freezer instead

I've been using dry ice with good results.

What’s your austenizing and tempering temps???

depends on the application, but always in the normal range. Tempering is in the low range, not the +/-1000f range

Generally speaking. In my experience, just doing a plate quench, and grinding in the bevels after hardening pretty much avoids warping on pretty much anything.

I've seen plenty of people complain about aebl warping. But i just did a prequench, then final austenitize and plate quench, then cryo. It came out like everything else.

If you plan to do a lot of the grinding before hand, especially something like a distal taper. Then its kind of up in the air.

I have used a decent amount of Cruwear and don't find it any more or less warp prone then other PM steels but I have occasionally experienced wrapping with all steels. If you are concerned about potential of warp run a stress releaving cycle of 1200F for 2 hours before heat treat.
