Cryo/560/566 Dilema

Hey Yall,

I have a dilema as to which knife to get next.

I've been lusting for a 560 for a while now but I have two issues with it. 1) The price, Im a full time college student and $175 ( for a blem) is a chunk of money for me. I would also have to wait til KershawGuy gets more. At the $260 price point the knife is pretty far out of my financial means at this time. 2) The size, Im going into the medical field soon and will have no reason to carry a 3.75" knife that weighs 5 ounces. I really wish they made a version thats ~ 15% smaller.

Then I saw the 566, which looks to be a slightly less expensive option to the 560 but I dont really want assisted.I really like that the 560 is Ti vs SS. Also, the 566 wont be out for a while..

So I was looking around BladeForums and saw the Cryo. It obviously isnt any where near the quality of the previous two but it would give me an idea of a Kershaw/ZT Hinderer Collabs, as well as, an idea of a framelock flipper. If this knife had G10 I would be all over it, even if it was just to see if I like this style of knife.

Thank you in advance for your help and sorry for such a long post

Get a Skyline if you want G10 and not assited and a flipper, Also a Zing.. :) , The Cryos are a great knife. They're pretty awesome and the fit and finish is great. They can be had in Black and Bead Blasted finishes now. The 0566 isn't out yet and probably won't be till the later part of the year. and the 0560 is huge and probably way overkill for you.

I know the Thermite is assisted but don't overlook it as a value option. Should be out before the ZTs.

As much as I love the 0560 it is a very big blade and I find myself reaching for my 0550 more often. I say get yourself a Cryo their really decent for the money. I will also second Chester on the Skyline it's an amazing knife at an amazing value.

Well the Cryo is made in china but KAI owns the factory that makes them, so its not being outsourced. Every Kershaw I've owned USA, Japan or China all were made top notch.

You should be able to make a G-10 slab pretty easily for the Cryo. Plus isn't the Cryo II slightly lager and already in circulation?

I think the 566 can be de assisted; if only they would hurry up and release it!

ADNJ- I really like the idea of having a g10 slab made for it. If I decide to get the cryo I will likely look for someone on here to do so.

I dont think the cryo 2 has been released yet.

Also, after all these reccomendations I think I'll probably end up with a few kershaws... A Cryo first, a CF blur, and probably a skyline (Do they make one in blue?)

Making a G10 scale for the Cryo is actually a huge pain because of the milling required for the SpeedSafe. It isn't a project I'd want to tackle. If someone was willing to make g10 Cryo scales, I'd be all over one though

OP - Keep an eye out for the Thermite... g10, frame lock, value price... seems to fit the bill except it's obviously made in China

I've got a black cryo on the way. I am considering an attempt at a g10 scale for it. Of course I will know when I get it. If it works I'll post it.

Kershawguy has 0550 blems for half the cost of a new 560/61. I just got a 550 gen 2 blem and like it better than my 0561.

I can't stop carrying it.

I vote get one of each. But seriously all are great choices. If you are on a budget then the cryo is the way to go, that or the soon to be released thermite. I second picking up a blem from kershawguy, I too got a gen 2 550 and honestly can't find anything wrong with it.

Or you could always get a cryo to hold you over until the release of the 566.

I just realized that I didn't really help at all in your decision making, but what the hell. I think no matter what you get you will be pleased

I think I'll probably end up with a 550 blem. I saw one Randy at SoloKnifeReviews worked on and Im pretty sure Ill see about getting him to do something similar to the one I get. Then add a frag or hinderer scale.

Has anyone had work done by Randy?

I'm dead set on a 566
I've never had a ZT but I'm very excited

If you really want to get a 560, Dave can definitely help you out. You should email him and ask about the "special price" that is talked about for the sold out zt0560 blem on his site.
