thinking about some guys using a home frig to cool with
maybe it does a little good but just how much good at that very little temp drop.?
I got this yesterday concerning Cryogenic treatment
I thought it very interesting.
look at the chart on their web site,
from this it can be deduced to the good it does.

input to keep this up for a little while would be good :) tyvm

I'm not sure if I agree with "removes stress cracks" but it's interesting reading anyway

Cryo-treated Tools - What's The Big Deal?
by Andrew Swan

You've probably heard the big claims about Cryogenic treatment and have
probably been wondering if it really makes a difference. That's because
Cryogenic treatment has had mixed to downright bad reviews in the shooting
community.

When cryo-treated barrels were first introduced, you would have thought
someone discovered the magic cure-all for perfect shots . . . that we'd be
seeing groupings at a thousand yards you could cover with a silver dollar
easily. Unfortunately, results didn't live up to the expectations or the
hype.

But it's a much different story when it comes to Cryo-treated tools.
Cryo-treated tools won't make you a master gunsmith, but your
cryogenically treated tools will last longer - saving you money in the
long run. Cryo-treatment has three main benefits:

· increases dimensional stability;
· removes stress cracks; and,
· improves wear and abrasive resistance.

How does Cryogenic Treatment Work?

Cryogenics is a one-time, irreversible treatment that permanently changes
the entire molecular structure of the material being treated, not just the
surface, creating a denser molecular structure, resulting in a smoother
contact surface area that reduces friction, heat, and wear.

Shame on you Dan, I've got to wake up on Monday morning to that BS ? Metals don't have molecules . You can't make the metal denser.Removes stress cracks ?? You bladesmiths that screw up heat treat and crack the blade will love that , just stick it in the freezer and the crack will magically disappear !!!

haha Mete you know I know better than that :) I thought I'd get your atention :D
the crack will magically disappear :D

the part I was interested in was the charts and the differances
the cryo made with differant steels

Mete how close do you think those results are?
they were, they say, from a university

BTW I sent Brownells a little email.. ;)

The most important line to pay attention to in that entire article is this one:

"Brownells will soon be offering a selection of cryo-treated tools that are treated at -320?FS, which provides the most improved tool performance in the industry. We’re in the process of creating a way to mark the tools so you’ll be able to tell your cryo-treated tools from your untreated tools.

Watch for them in the near future; you're going to love the results. "

It seems that every time I see fantastic claims about this stuff it is invariably being offered by somebody who is trying to sell the service. This one is particularly disappointing because they didn't even bother to do their basic metallurgy homework, as mete has pointed out.

This stuff will work really well if you have lots of retained austenite. Obviously, you will get better wear resistance if you have less austenite left over and dimensional stability is a given, if all the transformationis finally complete.

If we can find some information for an independant lab that is not trying to sell anything, then we could really discuss this stuff. Short of that, we may just as well have Ron Popeil (Ronco) designing our heat treatments. "... for a limited time only, for only $19.95, you can have a 900% increase in performance. And if you act now we will throw in a beautiful strand of faux pearls, free! That is a $500 value for only $19.95.... ":D

Now that I've read the whole thing it leaves me with a number of questions . Who sponsered the research ? Exactly how were the samples heat treated? Gains in what ?....My hero in economics is Carlo Ponzi, he knew finance and human nature. He promised them everything and they sent him all their money ! Even when he was in jail they were sending him money !! There is a sucker born every minute.

Dan, now that I read it again , you misquoted. It doesn't say "removes stress cracks" it says" removes stress". Still baloney!

NO Robert I don't think so, they changed it :grumpy: I emailed them right after I started this thread.

I copied that direct from their page, I didn't change any of it.

somebody is watching us ;)
